Tutoring and teaching have always come quite naturally; the ability to see the struggle from the student's perspective, and recognizing the demand for creative explanations to old problems, are the core of my now developed skills as an educator. I have volunteered in Title 1 classrooms in St. Louis through Teach for America and have been assisting high school students for standardized tests for the last 5 years. My education in University has presented incredible context for my early education, giving it new life and understanding; the "whys" all make sense. My education has also demonstrated the need for understanding, as opposed to mere memorization.
There are many buzz words and phrases applied to teachers and teaching styles. While I perfectly respect all of these new theories and methods of both teaching and learning, it must not be forgotten that each student is unique in the ... read more

I try to keep the material fresh and I avoid boredom and repetition at all costs. One of my best tools to connect with a young person is through humor. If the student feels relaxed they are more likely to absorb the information. I also use reverse psychology to turn the tables so they actually find themselves teaching me the material. This has been a successful tool with children I have mentored as well as my own children.
I began teaching/tutoring while in graduate school. I tutored undergrads in sociology, psychology, and social statistics. I also taught driver's education to high school students while in grad school. After ten years working in law enforcement, I switched to social services and I have been mentoring children in foster care for the past twenty years.

I love the written word and reaching people, so I ultimately chose to major in journalism. My love for teaching and instructing students led me to pursue my minor in education. In the past three years, I've tutored undergraduates in writing (grammar, composition, etc), graduate students (editing theses), proofing resumes and technical documents, and tutoring elementary and high school students in reading and basic math.
College students are difficult to work with because they think they know it all. This was a blessing in disguise because it taught me not only to learn different ways to tutor a student, but also to figure out through body language and little signals as to whether or not they were actually comprehending the information. Teaching is not just giving information and hoping they retain it. My teaching style consists of teaching, asking questions to ensure they know or u ... read more

Our school accepts students from 12-17 and I work with students in each age/grade level. I helped create our school's After School Program and I currently run the program. This entails me working with girls on their own individual goals that span all grades, all learning levels, and subjects. Working with at-risk girls has taught me that anyone, no matter the age or circumstance, can learn and do well in school. An education can be the one factor that can change someone's life and I think every student deserves the chance and opportunity to do their best in school.
As a soon to be M.S. graduate, I have always been driven to aspire towards a high level of excellence in education. I have earned one bachelor degree, a B.A. in English, which has helped me to acquire a position at a non-profit school for At Risk girls. Due to my degree, I have excellent grammatical skills due to writin ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I spent the first half of the decade pursuing my Bachelor's degree in preparation for the law school admissions process. My aunt, who owns and runs a law school preparation company in Seattle, Washington, taught me how to maneuver in the admissions process. I scored very well on the LSAT and was accepted to both law school's to which I applied. I believe I can take my experience and help other law school hopefuls achieve the results they will need to be admitted to a law school of their choice.
The LSAT is a game that requires mental stamina. Working one on one with a person to build up the sort of mental stamina required to withstand the LSAT process is essential. I have the patience required to pull out the strengths of my students and the tenacity required to train out their misconceptions. I take the achievements of my students as a personal triumph and work hard to help them m ... read more

Coming from a family of educators, I knew from an early age that I would become a teacher myself; therefore, all the steps taken to prepare for my professional life have been to enable me to be the best teacher I can be. I received both my bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of South Alabama. I received classroom teaching experience at a local middle school and as a university instructor. I currently have an extremely rewarding position with the Mobile Housing Board developing, coordinating, and instructing GED preparation classes. With this program I teach GED concepts and both group and individually tutor numerous students. I take pride in the fact that 100% of the students I referred to the official GED test obtained their GED. Unfortunately, the grant I work under has expired, and I will now explore more opportunities in the world of education.
