My comments on tutoring Reading : My past courses have included Myth and Human Culture, Beauty in Western Culture, Linguistic Anthropology and Literature Based Research. My method of active reading has helped several peers become more efficient in their literature based courses. As for younger students, I have completed courses in child and adolescent psychology as well as human cognitive behaviors. I do not use a cookie cutter approach to teaching reading as science has proven these "systems" ineffective. If you are looking for an individualized approach to reading and to increasing the enjoyment of reading, I may be able to help.

My approach is multimodal as all students are different. The one consistent element is that of an active learning environment. Passive memorization and repetitive tasks are not part of my repertoire as both have usually been unsuccessfully attempted by those seeking tutoring. I request a lot of participation from the student. Development of critical thinking is also a fundamental part of the tutoring environment. This skill alone will help students through all academic courses (and life in general). Although my expectations are high, we begin by building a firm foundation of study skills and habits which work to make these expectations attainable. My background knowledge in human cognition has given me invaluable insight into how we encode, retain and recall information.
As a returning adult college student, I have both classroom experience and life experience. My academic bac ... read more

Reading is one of my top subjects! I worked as a teacher in a private school for children with dyslexia. My position was as a Language Fundamentals Teacher and I was trained using the Orton-Gillingham approach to teaching. This is a multi-sensory approach and very highly regarded as a successful approach for children with dyslexia and reading disabilities. It includes tutoring for reading, reading comprehension, writing, spelling, grammar, vocabulary, and other skills related to English basics. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Human Development from Vanderbilt University with a specialization in Special Education and a Master's Degree in Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University. Both of my educational careers involved extensive training related to infant and child development, special needs and high-risk infant, child, adolescent, and family populations, and internships within numerous developmental centers, schools, and hospitals.

I have worked with children and adolescents for over 30 years in various capacities and not only have a substantial amount of experience in varying types of special needs, but have very good rapport with children of all ages. I thoroughly enjoy them and they seem to pick up on that quickly. My approach to teaching revolves around determining the individual needs of the student, their strengths and weaknesses, and their particular learning style. I also feel it is very important to engage the student in participating as an important part of the learning process, gathering information on their likes and dislikes, their perception of their strengths and weaknesses, and what teaching techniques they feel work or do not work for them.

I have experience teaching at a two-year university and a two-year college, in composition, communications, and public speaking. I have also run an educational non-profit that works with students to set college and career goals. I hold a PhD in Educational Leadership. Reading is one of my top subjects!

It is my belief that it is essential to provide a systematic and thorough procedure for teaching specific skills in each discipline. This process should be executed according to the needs of the student and their level of functioning. As the facilitor, I design tasks to promote creativity by providing stimulating hands on manipulatives. I incorporate the various modalities and styles of teaching to ensure a learning environment that elicits positive reinforcement.
I love children and have always been involved in the field of education since my graduation from Fairleigh Dickinson University. While raising my family, I have always been an active participant in school related activities both as a parent and on a professional level. My first teaching experience was in a theraputic classroom setting. this position helped me to develop a keen sensitivity to detect those children that mig ... read more

I am a College Student studying English and Politics

I am a very firm believer that each human being has a different way of learning. I also believe that each subject has a different way to be taught. I teach based off of my students, as well as the subject.
I was a tutor in high school for many elementary and middle school aged children. I am also experienced with writing papers, so I can help anyone who is writing for a college application or essay. I am a very quick learner, so if there is a subject I am not as familiar with I am willing to study it to help a student. My goal is to help students understand the context being taught, as well as teach them the importance of this knowledge. I have often used the phrase "When will I ever need this?" and I have learned later on in life that each subject is important. This is the messageI want to get across to children, that learning new things is a very important aspect of life.

Experienced, Inspirational Teacher and Student

Critical thinking is nourished so well-considered and studied opinions are more than welcome; they are essential. Students have conveyed to me that my style is one of "relaxed intensity" with a flair for the dramatic laced with a sense of humor and a genuine appreciation and respect for the views of others. Focused creativity is required.
I am a career educator who has taught English and other Humanities based courses extensively since 1988. My primary experience is on the college and university level but I also have a high school and middle school background. The educational and pedagogical philosophy I hold is this: The ability to communicate effectively remains the most vital of skills and is crucial to academic and career advancement.
