PROFESSOR-CHEMISTRY & PHYSICS

I base my teaching style and principle on "examples are the best teacher." I support my lectures with and by working examples.
For many years, I worked in industries and electric energy nuclear plants from where I retired. Thereafter, I have devoted my time to academia; teaching chemistry (General, Physical, Organic, Inorganic, Nuclear).I consider myself an enthusiastic, benevolent educator, dedicated to making a difference in young people's lives by creating an atmosphere conducive to active learning and exploration. I am gifted with ability to explain complex concepts in a relatable manner, allowing students to understand the material better. I motivate students to overcome obstacles and reach their full potential.

My comments on tutoring Physics : Took Newtonian physics and electro-magnetic physics (calc based, however algebraic expressions can be derived from calculus therefore well experienced in the algebraic physics as well.)

I like students to understand how the material they are learning can and is being applied to everyday situations. So I often will talk about the big topics that have been covered explain why they are useful and then show the student how to perform various calculations or apply the nessecary logic to solve problems.
I am a Mechanical Engineering and Geology dual major with a 3.6 GPA. I understand mathematics very well and have tutored fellow students in math and physics, successfully for years. I have a passion for learning and love when I can help others learn complex material and pass classes. I have aced College Math up through Differential Equations and Calculus 3 algebra, trigonometry and geometry are foundations of the higher mathematics and therefore I understand them extremely well. Degreed engineer with a love for math and science. Just ask if there is a math or science class you need help with. My teaching style starts in a classroom like setting, and then I modify it from there to best fit the student. One of the best physics professors I had was able to get us not only to learn physics inside the classroom, but point out the laws of physics we noticed in everyday life. This teaching style is very much the way that I tutor students today.

Physics is one of my top subjects! I took the AP Physics exam in tenth grade and got a five on it. I have also done extensive extracurricular studying of physics. I know classical mechanics, classical electrodynamics, special relativity and quantum mechanics well, and am familiar with quantum field theory.

From my tutoring experience I have noticed that most students who have trouble understanding a difficult concept do so because they did not understand a more basic prerequisite concept, so I try to help students "fill in the gaps." When working with students, I work through a few problems with them, and then I have them do a few problems on their own to see if they understand. If I see that the student does not understand some prerequisite concepts required to solve the problems, I make sure to have them understand those concepts before continuing with the current problems.
I gained my first tutoring experience by explaining difficult concepts to classmates that were struggling. I have been a tutor on WyzAnt for about half a year now. I have tutored math and physics students both at the high school and college level. All of the students that I worked with rated my lessons positivel ... read more

I have a laid back style of teaching. I like to simplify difficult concepts and explain in different terms in order to help the student understand it. I am very good at presenting information in a different way in order to make difficult concepts easier.
I have a bachelor's degree in biochemistry from West Virginia University. I also played football in college and was active in tutoring fellow players. My course load was heavy in chemistry, physics, biology, and biochemistry. I have also taken the MCATs in preparation for medical school and scored a 36 (98th percentile), so I am also qualified to assist students in MCAT preparation.

A Little Bit About Me...

Throughout my years of teaching I had some students who needed additional help so I tutored along with my teaching. I spent extra time with them after class or in a laboratory. I won many awards for teaching and was selected teacher of the year in 2002. Along with adult college students, I have worked with Boy Scouts, middle school students and high school students. Also, I volunteered as an instructor for the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System.
My teaching style is like a coach. I show the student the method to solve the problem and then I observe, correct and praise the student while he/she solves similar problems. It is important to explain the underlining principle in the problem so the student will be able to solve similar problems without just memorizing a few rules. I try to use the best learning style (verbal, logical, visual, auditory, kinesthetic, etc) that fits eac ... read more

More About This Tutor...

In 2002 I graduated with a degree in biotechnology. During the last semester of school, I was a substitute teacher, where I learned a lot about children and different teaching styles. After graduation, I pursued a career as a chemist, but I always maintained a second part-time job teaching, in some fashion. Usually, that teaching involved a pool. I have been a swimming lesson instructor for 10 years and have been a YMCA swim coach for 3 seasons, coaching over 200 children per year. In these opportunities, I've learned a lot about interacting with children. I am also a trainer for my coworkers and new employees who join our team. Throughout High School and College, I excelled in Math and Science, and use many of the concepts that I learned each day in the laboratory.
I believe that each child learns in a different way, and as a teacher it is my challenge and duty to teach in s ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a huge proponent of the dialectic and Socratic methods of teaching, while recognizing the need for the didactic to learn the basic methods of academics. My own experience, as well as my background in Psychology, helps me recognize that learning must be relevant, interesting, and conducted in a highly accepting and supportive environment. I am keenly aware of the sense of inadequacy of students who come to tutoring services (I have been one myself in the past) and make special care to make all my students feel that improvement is possible for anyone. The knowledge and strategies that high performers utilize are not exclusive; anyone can learn with patience and the right tutor!
I am a current teacher for the Princeton Review for the SAT (soon also for the GRE and GMAT), as well as a former tutor for Huntington Learning Center (SAT). A score of 1400 on the SAT allows me th ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Attending and graduating from Davidson College, a small liberal arts college in NC, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry was an extremely rewarding experience. I found that the college groomed their students by emphasizing analytical skills--both scientific and literary--and giving back to the community through both service and volunteerism. As a college student, I tutored students in mathematics courses up to Multivariable Calculus and chemistry students up to Organic Chemistry. I have also taught beginning Math, Reading, and SAT Preparation at a local learning center in Atlanta as well, in addition to my experience teaching and tutoring AP Chemistry as a high school teacher.
I find nothing more exciting and rewarding than teaching a topic or subject to an individual and seeing the expression and excitement on their face when they truly begin to understand the materia ... read more
