Elementary Math is one of my top subjects! A method I commonly employ in teaching math, especially math that involves processes, is to bring the student to the place where he or she both understands the concept and is able to orally explain it to me. After that, I have the student explain the process in writing. It is amazing what a difference this makes for the child's learning and mastery of the concepts. I also use a lot of manipulatives and hands-on learning strategies.

I am very active in the classroom and I believe in making learning fun and enjoyable. There are so many ways to help children learn, yet many of them are not used for one reason or another. If information must be memorized, I like to put it to song or a rap. Other methods of learning that are very useful are concept maps, discussions, and performing. Another very successful method that I've employed is having the student actually teach me rather than me teach the student. It is VERY effective.

I enjoyed being in the classroom with the students and watching them learn the material and succeeding. There is no greater joy in life than to see kids learn and want to succeed.

I like to teach using a hands-on approach. I believe the best way to learn is to do or at least attempt to do. I really find satisfaction when I see the “light bulb” go off and there is a glimmer if understanding in the eyes of my pupil.
For the past 10 years I have been teaching a wide variety of students ranging in age from their 80’s to 8. I obtained my BS in Information Technology which gives me a vast knowledge of computer applications, networking, and technical communications. I have also worked in a higher academic institution and have extensive knowledge of grammatical skills as well as different formats for composing research papers. I also possess a high level of patience and enthusiasm which I feels helps with the education process.

I love to learn, which is why I love teaching children. Every child learns differently, because of this, teaching is a learning process as well! I believe that students learn best through hands on activities that allow them to internalize the concepts they are struggling with. Whether it is using math manipulatives to understand multiplication and division or using letter tiles to understand consonant blends in reading, hands on activities are the best way to learn.

A Little Bit About Me...

After earning a Masters Degree in Math from UK, I accepted my first teaching position at Northern Kentucky Community College where I served as chair of the Math Dept from 1962-66. I returned to UK to pursue a doctorate in math and was assistant to the chair of the math department. During this time, I taught 2 undergraduate courses per semester from 1966-77. In 1977, I became Assistant Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, a position I held until I retired in 2005. While serving as Assistant Dean, I often taught evening classes composed of both undergraduates and non-traditional students. In 1990, I co-authored a college calculus book published by Harper and Row.
Since my retirement I have tutored math to students in the Black Achievers Program thru the Lexington YMCA. I truly love teaching math and have always received very high evaluations. I believe the way I explain ma ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I always enjoy having fun. I enjoy helping others understand things and have the communication abilities to be a great teacher. I enjoy working one-on-one with individuals and am very trustworthy. I am involved largely in church at home and in Ames and will work diligently and appropriately to ensure my teaching is effective. Like I said, I am pretty laid back, easy going, but also really enjoy helping others in a casual and fun environment.
I started my college career pursuing architecture because I enjoy drawing and design. Realizing buildings weren't my passion and agriculture was where I wanted to go, I changed to a triple major in ag systems technology, ag business, and economics.
