I work for a community college and have done advising, enrollment, testing, phone directory, and student sevices. I have attended many professional development workshops on education.
Critical thinking skills and untraditional ways are what I focus on. However the way someone learns, I will try to set the individual up to show how they learn and work with them. My comments on tutoring Earth Science : A favorite subject.

I started out tutoring elementary students in basic math and English grammar while I attended college part time in the 1980's. I continued tutoring young students and adults in the 1990's, tutoring Basic Math, Basic and Intermediate Algebra, Basic Geometry, English Composition, Speech, Study Skills and the Sciences. In addition, tips were given to enhance test-taking skills in hard-to-Ace subjects like Economics. I have tutored for the Sickle Cell Organization in 2001, helping students catch up numerous missed assignments. I tutor when the opportunity presents itself. Although a senior about 20 credits from my BS, I know I am qualified for this job. My passion for Chemistry rubs off on those around me. As a student I was most drawn to the ideas of Piaget and Gardner. Their teaching philosophies made the most sense to me when it came to teaching. Piaget focused on the idea of play as learning. This may sound strange to some, but a child is always learning, no matter they are doing, due to the fact that so many experiences are totally new to them. When children stacks blocks they are exploring many scientific concepts such as balance, gravity, cause and effect and many others. When children scribble with crayons they are exploring many concepts of art and aesthetics. Gardner describes the idea of multiple intelligences. Everyone is good at some aspects of learning and less so in others. Children learn in many different ways.
