I have history tutoring microbiology, physiology, and anatomy while earning my undergraduate degree. I tutored through the Wintrode Tutoring Center on the SDSU campus and was an intern for the anatomy and microbiology lab classes. Upon graduation I applied and was accepted into the University of South Dakota's Sanford School of Medicine. I went for one year, maintaining a 4.0 GPA, and have now decided to pursue a different passion in life besides medicine as I voluntarily withdrew in July of 2015. When I was in school, I could always understand or figure out what the teacher was trying to get across. Some students, however, didn’t always understand what was being explained. I was the kid who would rephrase the teacher’s remarks and explain it again in a way that the other students could understand. Not all students understand things in the same way. I try to find a way to explain things so the material is more interesting and less frustrating than it is when the teacher explains it. I believe in setting high expectations for students and believe that all students can learn and excel. Most of the students I work with have had such negative experiences with school that they become frustrated. I work to restore their self-esteem and to teach them to recognize what they need to do to learn. I compare my students to cars: some have automatic transmissions and they just get in and drive without much effort; some are like standard transmissions - it's not as easy for them, it's more work to learn how to work a clutch and shift gears, but they can learn to go as far and as well as the "automatic transmission" students. I have been told that I am a very good communicator and educator and can make concepts that seem complicated look much simpler and more comprehendible. Every student learns differently but they all respond to a few tricks I've learned. Positive feedback helps all student gain confidence and reduce their frustration while learning.
