A Little Bit About Me...

Socratic- I encourage questions, challenges, am willing and happy to look things up with students, know I do not know everything and enjoy revising my own knowledge as I go. Current knowledge changes continuously, and a day in which I learn something myself is a good one.

Have taught multiple paramedical subjects at National College in Indianapolis from 11/10- current. Got two english major daughters through HS math (through trig) and physics. (Hardest of all)

Anatomy is one of my top subjects! I was educated in pre-veterinary medicine as an undergrad. This required a lot of anatomy and physiology based courses. I also come from a medically based family and was introduced to anatomy and physiology at fairly young age. By the time I took anatomy and physiology at the collegiate level, I did not have to use my medical dictionary for definitions due to having an expansive knowledge of the terminology already.

I am a certified modeling teacher. Modeling is a "hands on" inquiry based style of teaching. I teach through allowing the students to deal with a given problem or scenario. I then use extensive amount of questioning to help the child to use their logic to solve the problem. This not only teaches the science material; but it also helps the student to learn how to think logically and to ask themselves the right questions. In other words, I don't just teach the material, I teach students how to think critically in a way that not only helps the student to learn the science, but also in other areas where critical thinking is needed to help understand and solve problems.

I'm a graduated student from Purdue University with a BS in Speech Pathology and Audiology (SLHS). Between my time in both high school and college, my GPA never dropped below a 3.0. Both settings of education included years of math and science, and in high school four years of writing, English, and history. Throughout my scholastic career I have always been a focused and driven student. While at Elder, I was a Spanish and science tutor, graduated in the top four percent of my class, and received the distinction of "National Hispanic Scholar." Also, during the summers, I volunteered at Children's Hospital, monitoring play-rooms and working with children of all ages. Here at Ball State I am pursuing degrees in Pre-Medicine and Spanish and am well-versed in Chemistry, Biology, Anatomy, and all aspects of writing, both in English and Spanish. My cumulative GPA at this time is 3.93. Last semester I made my first foray into the world of teaching, and spent the semester working on English pronunciation and grammar with a Cuban woman. This experience was invaluable and opened my eyes to the joy of helping someone learn while giving me the skill set necessary to create lesson plans and monitor progr ... read more

My teaching style is one of friendly leadership. Working through problems or lessons with the student by leading them through it, then working it with them side by side while explaining the details helps them achieve the accomplishment of learning without making them feel as if they were just instructed how to do it. Helping a student learn is more than just teaching them a lesson in math, science, or English; it’s about being someone that they can look up to as a role model, being someone that they can learn from in more than just an academic manner, and being someone who is there for them when they need something. Personally, I think students of all ages and academic levels need to be coached and pushed to achieve their full potential.
During college, I changed my major several times, taking numerous classes for each one to determine what I wanted to do with my life. I experi ... read more

I believe that all children are unique and gifted in some way. I truly prefer to work with them one-on-one. Each child learns in a manner that is a challege to meet and I welcome this challenge and often find that I learn as much from them as they might from me. Children love to learn and I love to provide that opportunity in as many varied and intersting ways as I can.
I have taught 4 and 5th grade in the Texas School Systems for 24 years. I worked as a retired teacher in the Adams Wells Special Services Coop for 3 years (2006-2009)as a teacher's aide with special needs students both in the elementary and high school levels. Those children varied from autistic, cerebal palsy, Attention Deficit Disorders with and without Hyperactivity. I really enjoyed working with these students to help them with their reading, math, and overall achievement. I am currently employed as a substit ... read more

I have learned that the best way to teach is to let the student know how much you enjoy the subject and then work to make them feel the same way. I also know that you cannot predict what methods will be best for all people. I prepare extensivesly with sample tests, worksheets, as well as fun learning activities. When it comes to the tutoring session, I am not uptight about my style, I can sense when a method is or is not working and then use any or all of the methods that help the student retain the knowledge. When that happens, you know that there will not be much of a need for you anymore, but it is a great feeling to help someone enjoy learning as much as I do personally.
I have tutored students for many of the college science classes. I have also been a tutor for an elementary school in Bloomington. I am also an experienced test prep tutor, having helped students prepare fo ... read more
