When explaining concepts to students in classes that I sub-taught I felt the best approach was to talk to individual students and use a whiteboard to clearly explain the concepts. I usually would give hints or start the problem, and then I would look for the student to add insight on how to progress. I also feel that teaching is an adaptive process and each student has their own learning personality that the teacher needs to recognize and adjust to. Asking questions throughout the learning process and maintaining a positive attitude also aid the learning process.

I like to first show a basic example of the problem, then show how the problem can be solved. I will then show another example that is a little more involved. After this, I let the person being mentored try solving a similar problem.
I implemented and maintained custom code for a number of clients, and I performd lead programmer functions and mentor others. Every few months I conducted "lunch and learns" for programmers and analysts. During these sessions I would describe what code was doing in a particular module. This would help them with their implementations.

I like to use real world examples of how math concepts are applied to give the student a better understanding. I believe that a big reason many high school students struggle in understanding concepts of algebra, geometry, and calculus is that they are unable to visualize how it is applied to the real world.
