I feel that the most important step to being an effective teacher is to make the material relevant. If the student does not see a relevant reason to learn the material, the learning curve will be much steeper. Then, I work hard to be sure the student understands my commitment to partner with him/her in the learning process, and that process is a two-way street. And, once I've determined the method of learning that works best for a student, I design the material to accommodate that method. Once these goals are met, success is assured.
My experiences as the oldest of seven children instilled in me the desire to educate others, so I obtained my BS degree in Biology and Secondary Education. I taught 7th and 8th grade sciences for five years before staying home to be a full time mother and substitute teaching on the high school level for 3 more years.
