Russian Tutor Masters from BYU former BYU teacher

I have a masters in Second Language Teaching specialty- Russian from BYU. I also served an LDS mission in Russia (Rostov-na-Donu mission) where I lived for 18 months speaking, living, and interacting with Russians every day. I have been tutoring students in Russian for 5 years and have taught Russian at BYU for 2 years. I love this language and know how to teach according to different learning styles.
Every student has a different learning style and I therefore, have multiple teaching styles to accommodate. I believe in learning through experience and therefore provide my students with real-life examples and tasks to complete so that they are more able to function in Russian settings. I also include learning of Russian culture in my teaching because understanding culture is important to understanding language. Activities are engaging and not simply rote memorization. I love teaching & sharing new experiences in a creative way!

I was a natural born musician, started playing guitar at the age of 2. Later switched to piano and took formal lessons for 7 years. I have composed scores for several plays and small projects. I still compose music to this day. I gained an interest in French when I was in middle school. From there, I learned it very quickly and continued to build on it through making French films and going on a biking excursion in France. Mon voyage était formidable et j'ai appris beaucoup!
My teaching style is very open, free-flowing, interactive, and patient. I love to move beyond the theory and into the natural conversation or practice of it.

An in-depth education in Music Composition.

My teaching style consist of using a variety of learning technique and atmospheres. It is a good idea to study the habits and styles of other composers, classical and modern to get an idea of how that compares to the student's style. Writing or composing sample songs based on someone else's style is a good idea, such as Beethoven, or David Newman, etc. Using theory practice is useful, but doesn't necessarily define a composer. Things such as chord structures, tonalities, repetition, and familiarity will be studied. We can work on solo instruments, or orchestrations of any size. Becoming familiar with certain techniques of composition will become very useful for the student, as he/she learns to express him/herself through music.
Since earning my Bachelors Degree from the University of Utah in Music Composition I have produced a Christmas album of piano arrangements, and origi ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Hello, my name is Lauren and I absolutely love tutoring! I have tutored since I was in high school (about 5 years of experience total)and more recently have worked as a Peer Tutor at Westminster College, as well as teaching private voice and piano lessons. As a biology major, I'm most experienced in science and math related areas, particularly general biology, general chemistry, statistics, algebra, and geometry. I am also very qualified to tutor ACT and SAT test prep, as I scored extremely high in all areas of the two tests, earning a 34 on the ACT and a 2190 on the SAT. I'm also qualified to tutor in several humanities areas, especially writing-a skill strongly emphasized by Westminster's intensive and selective Honors Program. I have also taken AP tests in English Literature (5), Human Geography (5), European History (4), and American History (4) and IB tests in English (6) an ... read more

More About This Tutor...

After graduating from Utah State, I taught 2nd grade for a year at a charter school. It was a good experience, but I wanted the chance to work with students in a variety of settings. During the past school year, I was hired as the Spanish Specialist at another charter school which has been another great experience. Some of my favorite subjects to teach are math, writing, history, music, and Spanish. I have tutored in English, reading, math, and Spanish.
A proverb I once heard best describes my teaching philosophy: "Tell me and I forget, show me and I remember, involve me and I become." Thus, my goal as a tutor is to help students discover for themselves. That way learning becomes not only more engaging, but more lasting as well.

It is extremely important to encourage students. I would teach the basics to my students. To start with, piano students learn the step process in scales I am good with kids. I am willing to help them learn what they need to at their pace. I am patient, considerate, and I long to help others succeed in the areas that interest them. Students will also learn how to follow the music they play, whether it is a simple time signature, (for example, four-four,) or compound such as six-eight.
My experience with teaching piano lessons started in September 2006. I took Group Piano I, and Group Piano II the following semester. The students taught someone what was covered in each class. My first full-time student came at the end of the fall semester 2008. It was my first time teaching and getting paid. I evaluated how I did with teaching him after the six months. I have come up ... read more

I believe any child can learn the basics of any subject, but it requires that the teacher find a method of explanation that the child can understand. I believe that direct guidance is preferable during the initial stages of learning, but must be followed with opportunities for the child to solidify the knowledge on his or her own. Regardless of the approach, teaching happens best in a loving and non-judgmental atmosphere, which I will strive to foster with each of my students. I believe that if done correctly, a good educator can make all the difference in a child’s life, and that will be my goal for each of my students.
I have long had a love of learning, which has most recently expressed itself in my earning a BS in Psychology from Brigham Young University. This area of study gave me experience in the fields of math and writing, as I had to perform and analyze numerous psychologi ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My most important quality for tutoring is a passion for education. I believe that good learning is based in appreciating the value of the subject matter, and when I teach I strive to make the material relevant to the student. Even students with great willpower do not learn very effectively when they are not interested in the material. I also teach with analogies and comparisons. People learn best by seeing similarities and differences between new concepts and concepts they are familiar with. Even the most difficult concepts can become clear when illuminated by good analogies and comparisons. Many students do not realize that they are just as capable as other students but need to approach the subject from a different angle.
I have been very successful throughout school. I'm a Presidential Scholar, Toyota Scholar, Gordon B. Hinckley Scholar, and a Chicago Tribune Scholar. I ... read more

I strive to help your child achieve academic and personal success. In my student teaching, I saw first-hand the need for students and teachers to have a relationship where fairness and mutual respect are top priorities. I also witnessed how students can feel the intention of their teachers: when teachers truly desire for their students to succeed, the students can sense this. I am committed to creating a positive relationship with your child and to let him/her know that his/her success is my main goal. When teachers have high expectations, their students consistently rise to meet them. I will set my expectations high for your child, as I believe he/she can and will meet them with the proper support and encouragement.

I want to help those who may not otherwise speak, vocalize their own narratives and cultural idiosyncrasies through discovery of literature and language. Empathy, which is vital to tutoring, is as vital, if not more, to teaching. I not only do my best to usher students gently through the writing process, I shut up and listen to their stories. To see a student light up at that moment of realization when they finally understand a concept, or to watch their fear for English melt just a little bit, is, for me, an immeasurable honor. I like making people laugh, and I like when students feel I am there as not only a gentle voice of authority, but as a friend, too.

More About This Tutor...

As a recent graduate of BYU in Business Management (finance emphasis) I have been able to show excellence in my own school work. I have a major GPA of 3.85 (including many Accounting and Finance classes) as well as receiving a 4.0 while taking the “finance core” classes. Receiving a score of “5” on both the Calculus AB and BC tests during high school prepared me for college. Previous tutoring includes training new workers for employment positions (including a customer service representative and a restaurant position). While serving a 2-year mission for the LDS church I was able to train other missionaries. Much of this training included a personalized one-on-one teaching of how to approach, teach, and perform the necessary work.

I like the tutoring environment because I like seeing individual progress. It is easier to assess where the child is. I believe that the basics are essential to moving forward in education. Memorization of math facts makes it easier for a child to learn new material because he isn't bogged down. I don't believe enough emphasis is placed on arithmetic in today's schools. Basic arithmetic skills make story problems easier. Types of story problems need to be practiced, not just thrown in at the end of a chapter without much information on how to do it. I am patient and punctual. I like being with students.
