I like to teach ESL from the Communicative Competence ideal. Integrating reading writing speaking listening into thematic units. Learning a new language requires hands on experience. If for example we are doing a unit on weather then my students may role play a weather man. Gather vocabulary from a newspaper. Count change as if they were really buying something. Read and write from a reporters perspective, or even travel to a museum with a reoprt and description of things they have seen using adjective and adverbs for color and detail. I also believe reading should be taught at the appropriate reading level for comprehensions sake. If a reader is below the 98% error level, they will not succeed. When I first started college, I had no idea what to major in. I started taking creative writing and literature classes though, and found my niche in English. I enjoy writing, reading, proofreading, checking grammar and punctuation, and find myself reviewing billboards and magazines for errors. I've been able to put these skills to actual use as an instructor, tutor, and advisor for college students. I have taught Business Writing, Business Communication, and Keyboarding classes. As a recent graduated of the University of Minnesota-Duluth I am a very motivated and energetic person. I earned a 4 year degree in 3 1/2 by taking college level classes in high school and taking extra classes each semester. As a Communication student I took many journalism and writing classes and am familiar with different writing styles as well as citing formats such as MLA and APA which I know can be difficult for many students.
