I acquired a Bachelors of Science in Biology, with a minor in Chemistry from the University of MN, Duluth. I also have a broad math and physics background, and have a great enthusiasm for both.

Sharing what I’ve learned about writing has been the most gratifying aspect of my work over all these years. I’ve learned that lecturing or directing is an ineffective, if not counterproductive, method of teaching. Rather, I prefer to help the student reach the same conclusions I have through questioning him or her, first about perceptions and then about what options exist for most clearly and accurately recounting them. Technical aspects such as grammar and punctuation obviously don’t lend themselves to this approach. For these, I use the time-proven red pen, but I also review the markup with the writer, explaining the logic behind the correction.

I have assisted an elementary school teacher in tutoring mathematics. My interest in learning styles began with studying language-learning and now applies on a daily basis to my private piano teaching. As a teacher, I have been described as patient but exacting, gentle but direct. A Little Bit About Me...

My approach to teaching involves finding the best learning venue for each individual student. I don't believe in 'fitting' the student to the method, rather finding the method that works for each individual. I use phonetics when that is the simplest method, the challenge of games/competition when that is what clicks for my student. I have even used graphics to create a learning environment for students who lack imagination! The goose-bumps I get when I see the 'lightbulb' of recognition turn on in a student's eyes remains my reason for wanting to share the pursuit of knowledge with everyone!
