I began tutoring in high school then in college, I majored in mathematics to pursue a career in teaching. My career took another direction yet I continued my passion for teaching others through tutoring at local non-profits. Last year, I taught 8th grade math at a local public middle school. This past summer, I taught summer school to 3-5th graders in both math and English. This year, I continue teaching through tutoring at an elementary school. My education allows me to tutor in Math, Business, Physics, English, Economics, Public Policy.
I enjoy working with all learners - no matter the age, child or adult. I enjoy the challenge it brings of figuring out what teaching method works for each individual. In my experience, it takes ingenious and quick thinking to activate the learning potential for some learners. I believe that switching the types of teaching is effective to continue ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My experience is as broad as it is varied. When I taught at Sylvan, I taught every course they needed me to. When I taught professionally, I taught teams of scientists and then instructional designers. I'm comfortable with all ages and backgrounds.
Scaffolding and positive reinforcement describes my teaching style; combined with a healthy dose of humor and individual, associative modeling. Learning should be fun and challenging. Busy work doesn't have to take such a negative connotation.

A Little Bit About Me...

I've taught basic English Composition for 30 years in a variety of settings including traditional, non-traditional, and proprietary undergraduate programs; additionally I've taught entry level graduate writing/research and served as department director/administrator in both traditional and prorietary settings. I've worked in tutoring/writing centers at various schools and individually tutored students ranging from middle school to PhD level throughout my teaching career. Additionally, I've volunteered in other situations as well including 4-H, Explorers (BSA), Habitat for Humanity, and other non-profit situations and served as an elected official.
My teaching style is calm, patient, and supportive. I've learned over the years that in every situation, including the classroom, that in teaching writing, the instructor must begin where the student is, recognize and affirm existing posi ... read more

While teaching high school students and adults I have helped many struggling learners. One of my main goals in all interactions with students I strive to build their confidence. I like to be a person my students can trust who they also understand has high expectations for them. My classroom management is built around responsibility and accountability, and humor.
I graduated with a BS in history in 1996. After nearly seven years working for a large communications corporation I returned to college to get my teaching credentials. I completed a years student teaching and have taught middle school and high school at a local private school. At that school I often tutored students, offered help on my own time, and was the monitor of the school's study hall, Homework Club. Since 2009 I have taught adults at a local technical college. Patients is a amazing thing to have when trying to teach. Many students learn at a different pace and I feel that finding that pace for every student is important. If you try to cram or learn something to quickly it only become heartache and bad grades.
In College I would form groups to try and study for upcoming test or exams. Doing this it really helped me to learn what I was studying and how other people learn as well.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am drawn to education by the enjoyment of children and I am often requested as a substitute teacher because of my calm demeanor, patience and kindness with all children. Children and adults learn developmentally; by using their previous knowledge to build new understanding. I believe in helping children realize their potential by supporting them with a comfortable base of knowledge and then giving them challenges that they can successfully work through. In the developmental model kids learn step by step and tutoring provides the invaluable opportunity for individual assessment on which to prepare deliberate and specific instruction to quickly move students toward the excellence of their unique human potential.
As a seeker of truth with an acute interest in human nature, cognition and development, I am naturally drawn to education of today’s children to help construct the foundati ... read more

My experience is broad and important. Coming from a family of educators and athletic coaches, I know how to use educational, volunteer and work experiences to the benefit of those in need of guidance and direction. With experiences in the fields of construction, engineering, water treatment, natural resource management and diplomacy I can help both overachieving and underachieving students recognize the importance of education and pushing oneself to achieve.
My teaching style is defined by my father, a teacher and coach. Successful in both the classroom and on the athletic field, he made sure that each student and athlete knew what was expected of them. What was expected of them was a mixture of hard work, discipline, sacrifice, and success. Success measured not necessarily by winning, for example, but by doing the best one can do with the gifts they had been given. In the en ... read more
