Hearing Impaired is one of my top subjects! I recently graduated with honors from the National Technical Institute for the Deaf. I graduated with a BS in American Sign Language interpreting. Through 4 years of rigorous study, I learned American Sign Language, PSE, as well as Cued Speech. I have interacted with and interpreted for a multitude of Deaf and hard of hearing people. I have worked with deaf and hard of hearing children, as well as Deaf and hard of hearing adults. I have also worked with deaf and hard of hearing people with a variety of disabilities. I have taken several Deaf-taught classes on Deaf Culture, as well as classes on Deaf oppression.

I have always had a passion for learning. Part of my passion includes helping others learn, grow, and succeed. As an undergraduate student, I volunteered as a Peer Mentor in order to help new students become accustomed to their classes. I also worked as a Peer Mentor for students who were struggling with their grades. Peer Mentors are carefully selected by Rochester Institute of Technology through a detailed application process. I volunteered as an English tutor, as well as a proofreader of essays, research papers, and projects. I have had the opportunity to work at a daycare for several years with children ranging from 6 weeks of age to 12 years. I have loved being able to help these children grow, learn, and succeed in their education. As a tutor, my specialties are American Sign Language and English. My undergraduate studies were in American Sign Language-English interpreting ... read more

I received my Bachelor's Degree from Houghton College and my Master's Degree from SUNY Brockport. I have taught in an Elementary School for 9 years. I taught second grade for four years and kindergarten for the last five. I have also tutored on and off for the past four years. I also attend 30 hours of professional development every year.
From my experience I know that students learn in many different ways. As a teacher and a tutor I find out how each child learns. I then develop interesting lessons that meet each child's specific needs. It is important that the children are actively involved in their own learning process. I believe that every child is entitled to an education within a safe and nurturing environment, which is reflected in my own classrooms. I am passionate about teaching my students the skills and tools they need to one day pursue knowledge on their own. A teacher knows his/her students as individuals with their own set of experiences, needs, strengths and weaknesses and recognizes these needs, teaching in a manner that is conducive to the individual child’s learning style. I believe that I can accomplish this by designing differentiated lessons that incorporate my student’s skills and the various intelligences. I am applying for this position for many reasons. This learning can be assessed to evaluate student needs and understanding, as well as teacher effectiveness. It is important that in each classroom I am also learning by constantly reflecting and evaluating my methods. It is becaus ... read more

I firmly believe teaching requires structure. In that regard, the learning process requires a sequences of steps. Firstly, the student must understand the problem to be solved or the skill to be acquired. Secondly, examples are required to show how to approach and solve a prolem. Lastly, overarching concepts can be introduced to unitfy that which is new with that which is already understood. This approach has succesfully trained and kept the interest of all individuals that I have mentored.
