After graduating from Michigan State University with a B.S. in Biological Sciences and a minor in Chemistry, I spent an entire school year teaching Advanced Biology and Introduction to Chemistry classes at Eaton Rapids High School. I was in charge of the full scope of teacher responsibilities, including curriculum planning, lesson planning, instruction, demonstrations, laboratories, grading, parent teacher conferences and IEP meetings. I recalled my difficulties in learning difficult subjects, my difficulties are not universal but I draw from them in finding what is blocking the student from grasping certain concepts. I recall teaching my children at a very early age the concept of ratios. I used windows, tiles from the kitchen, a pizza pie etc. This, before going to pencil and paper and it worked. Till this day they know fractions inside and out because they understood the concept in real life. This is typically my approach, then we can go and do problems in the abstract on paper.

A student does not benefit from having their teacher do their work. I find that modeling a concept once or twice suffices. After that, a student is best served by having their teacher guide their mental processes so that they become accustomed to the mode of thinking that either results in the correct answer (in a quantitative subject) or a strong, well-reasoned argument (in a qualitative one). Such guidance must be based on the individual student's interests and aptitudes.
