I earned my Bachelor of Science in Education degree from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, in 1989. Since graduation I have worked as both a full-time teacher and a substitute teacher. I have taught full-time at five different traditional schools and Florida Virtual School. In these positions, I have taught Algebra II, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Trigonometry, Analytic Geometry, Algebra I, 7th Grade Math, 8th Grade Math, Computer Applications, and various general math courses. Math Can be Fun!

I have been tutoring in mathematics from basic elementary math to Calculus I for the last 10 years. Studying engineering showed me how meticulous I had to be with my study habits and I am now able to teach other students these same tips. I currently work as a tutor at Gulf Coast State College where I am familiarized with the material and common questions daily. I also offer freelance tutoring for students of all ages.
My teaching style is for the student to be methodical with their work and identify key words. I offer correction but also like to be patient to truly understand which part gives the student a struggle.

My teaching style is very simple, but is one that took a long time to learn. In college you are taught everything but HOW to teach. I learned the HOW by watching my teachers and having some very good mentors. I began to ask myself, " why do I learn more from this instructor than that instructor?" No matter what the subject is, you have to learn 2 things to reach the student. One, how does this student learn. Two, you can't force the information. I feel that a student learns more and shows more excitement when they are allowed to find answers on their own. This also takes building a relationship with the student.

In general however I tend to back up and work on the material that the student already is familiar and comfortable with. Once some review on the known material has been done I like to begin moving toward the material that is currently being reviewed. The length of time spent in the "review phase" is completely dependent on the student's current situation. Many of the things in life that we don't "get" are things we don't understand. When teaching, I try to break things down and simplify them so they can be easily understood. Often the kids in my class are those who do not like to be challenged, so I incorporate a lot of questions to provoke thinking and problem solving on their own. Since repetition is a key component to learning, I review a lot which requires patience but pays great dividends in the long run.
