I have been an educator for almost 20 years. I began my teaching career as a substitute teacher and immediately fell in love with teaching children with special needs. Desiring to continue to teach, I finished a Master's degree which gave me the endorsements to teach K-12 children with special needs. I give my students the information, I show them how to apply the information through modeling, I practice with them and then I release them to apply the technique themselves. Afterward I assign an project for an artifact that allows them through written words to translate their knowledge to another person. I mostly work with adolescents and middle school aged children as an English teacher.Working with students with disabilities has taught me to be patient, considerate and compassionate with diverse groups needing more attention than regular ed children. Each child has a different learning ability and level of comprehension which has to be meet individually in a classroom of 32 kids.
