I am a credentialed elementary teacher, but have experience tutoring K-12, both in person and virtually. I began tutoring virtually starting in mid 2019 and refined my skills during the pandemic when everything became virtual. I also currently teach 3rd grade in California and participate regularly in plenty of professional development, including post graduate courses. This is my 6th year teaching in the classroom, but my umpteenth year working with children in a school setting. I use a comprehensive homeschool curriculum with progress monitoring reports, and my lessons are interactive and designed to meet the needs of each student. I try to have fun and make it relevant to their own experience, and I ensure that every student feels included and welcomed. I am a graduate of Virginia Tech with a BS in Biology with a concentration in microbiology. I also have minors in leadership and Chemistry. Therefore my understanding of the sciences and basic mathematics is quite extensive. For two years in school I tutored in mainly Chemistry but I also tutored in Chemistry applied mathematics such as statistics, geometry and algebra. I also was an EMT for five years and as part of my duties I mentored the new EMTs. I also, as a senior EMT member, hosted many Girl Scout and Boy Scout events. I am a firm believer that the science subjects are not as difficult as many students are afraid they are. In my past tutoring experiences I like to allow the student to explain to me in their terms their understanding of the subject. I then fill in the gaps or revise their understanding. I believe that all students can achieve academic success, even in their least favorite subjects. However, everyone learns in different ways with sundry motivations. Many students require some one on one time with a qualified teacher, who will both identify the student’s learning style and adapt their teaching style accordingly. I also believe that a student’s confidence in their abilities will play into their success. A skilled teacher will tailor lessons and feedback to build on skills a student does have, instilling confidence and encouraging the learner to meet the challenge of complex topics.
