A Little Bit About Me...

I have been a working graphic designer for most of my life after graduation from Ohio State. After 12 years of design I was asked to participate in an art and education program at Chicago Public Schools Autism Program. I was hired on the spot and then continued with education by obtaining a masters degree in special education in Tempe Arizona. In Arizona I was assigned as an inclusion teacher for 9, 10 11th grade English. I had to accommodate diverse learners and plan instruction. I hold a valid Arizona Cross Catagorical Special Education Certificate that expires August 2013
I can identify students problems in learning and can accommodate and modify curriculum so diverse learning can understand grade level state standards. I enjoy the individuality of each student. One student may learn best visually, while another through kinesetics, each a valid learning style. Once a child can find their style they can confidence in their ability to learn. I believe each child can learn I just need to help them find the confidence to do so. I listen to past successes the child tells me about to see how that intersects with learning styles. I believe patience, listening, and perseverance are the tools that help the teacher help the student best.

The first thing that I like to do as a teacher is tell my students why I chose my profession. I think a little insight as to who I am, lets my students know how passionate I am about my job. All students do not learn in the same ways, nor do they learn at the same paces. It is my job to build upon my students' strengths, and make them believe that they can succeed.
I received my BS degree with the intent of gaining a MA in teaching. While I was obtaining my MA, I performed as a substitute teacher in several school districts. I had access to 2 long-term teaching positions. The first was for high school special education in history and the second was for 8th grade language arts. I fully love my architecture career, but I have never lost my love for math and science! Every day I use basic math, geometry, and even physics (to calculate structural components). I am forced to design creative solutions and think outside the box. I hold a 4 year BS and a 5 year Bachelor of Architecture, and I have tutored on and off over the years.
