I have found, through teaching a wide variety of people a wide variety of subjects, that there is no one way to reach someone. Everyone has individual strengths and weaknesses. What I have found, however, is requisite to meet the needs of all students is respect for the learner. Without the requisite respect and encouragement, struggling students find it easy to give up and continue to believe that they aren't able to learn the material being presented. With respect and understanding for the students' needs, along with patience, preparedness and open communication, I feel I am able to reach students who are willing to be reached, and some who initially aren't so willing.

I've always loved to read, I inhereited it from my father who got it from his father. I'm an avid writer as well. I currently write book reviews for The San Francisco Book Review and the San Diego Book Review. You'll find samples of my work at http://www.thereadingcan.blogspot.com . I really feel I can help youth and young adults learn to read. Currently I work with individuals who have disabilities to find and maintain work. I would like to help youth and young adults with disabilities learn to read as well.
Every one can learn. Sometimes an individual learns in their own unique style and finding that style is the key to teaching them. The best way to teach someone is to guide them when they come to a road block, rather than to give them the answer. The amount of pride and prestige that comes from having figured out a problem on their own is the most important thing.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have eight years experience teaching Math at Lyndon State College in Vermont and at Lorain County Community College in Elyria, Ohio. I was also a writing tutor at The Writing Center at Lyndon State. In addition, I tutored students there in English,Math,and Economics for a program called Project Excel. I also attended tutor training sessions as part of that job. Additionally, I tutored college students privately while earning my degree at The University of Rhode Island. As a full-time instructor at Lorain, I was required to schedule 10 office hours per week to be available to students, so I gained a lot more experience in the tutoring process during that time.

A Little Bit About Me...

I think Math is the most beautiful subject and the highest form of human expression. A lot of times people are turned away from it due to a high school math experience that they perceive as dry and boring. When I tell people I love math, I too often hear "well, better you than me!" I think part of the high school math experience should include turning students on to mathematical discovery. Confronting confusion and working through to develop an understanding that feels personal and thorough. I believe that everyone must learn in an individual way at their own pace and I am prepared to put in the necessary effort to give my students that opportunity. I began my professional career in land surveying. After the birth of my two sons I revised my goals toward an educational experience at the elementary level. I completed my practicum in Elementary Education and performed a year of substitute teaching in both the elementary and middle school levels. Since that time I went on to complete a secondary degree in mathematics with a certification in secondary level education.
