I know that each student has an incredible amount of potential and the trick to unlocking it is not in forcing a set way of understanding ideas, but in approaching each problem from several different fronts and working towards a total understanding of one concept before moving on to the next. Secondly, laughter and enjoyment need to be part of the learning process. Concepts should be taught from the bottom up, where every new piece of information is simply an outgrowth of existing knowledge, rather than something new that needs digesting.

I enjoy teaching because it helps students as much as it helps me. Being able to explain material helps retain knowledge and skills associated with the subject matter. I enjoy seeing students and colleagues be successful in their learning experience.
As a student at Lynchburg College, I have had the opportunity to serve as a Peer Assisted Study Session Leader in general and organic chemistry. I have a great deal of experience training fellow employees and have devised the system of show them once, let them do it once while talking them through it, and then let them do it once without assistance. This system also translates to teaching. The last step is the most important; it forces the student to think for him or herself and instills confidence that the problem is not beyond his or her level of understanding. It is very important to teach students how to figure things out for themselves – probably the most important lesson I learned at UVa.
