I have been pursing my degree in Early Childhood Education at the University of South Carolina. In 2002 I graduated with a degree in biotechnology. During the last semester of school, I was a substitute teacher, where I learned a lot about children and different teaching styles. After graduation, I pursued a career as a chemist, but I always maintained a second part-time job teaching, in some fashion. Usually, that teaching involved a pool. I have been a swimming lesson instructor for 10 years and have been a YMCA swim coach for 3 seasons, coaching over 200 children per year. While much can be gained from looking at previous evaluations and test scores, I think that it is crucial to let the student express their needs to make them feel comfortable and build a commitment to the teaching program. In individual sessions, I feel that allowing the student to discuss concepts out loud in addition to completing written exercises and preparing questions facilitates the learning process. I also find that real world analogies are useful ways of linking academic information to previously learned concepts and facilitate the student's understanding. Because people learn in different ways, I initially try to find out as much as possible about how each person learns the best. When presented with an assignment, I ask my tutee to read the directions of the assignment and to relay them back in his/her own words. I ask which aspects are clear and which aspects are troubling. In explaining a challenging concept, I will often give a personal example of how I would go about answering the question to see if my method works for the tutee as well. I also try to bring helpful tools from my own collection or other resources. I attempt to make the tutee as comfortable as possible, as to not discourage them, so they have no hesitations about asking for further help.
