A Little Bit About Me...

In 2002 I graduated with a degree in biotechnology. During the last semester of school, I was a substitute teacher, where I learned a lot about children and different teaching styles. After graduation, I pursued a career as a chemist, but I always maintained a second part-time job teaching, in some fashion. Usually, that teaching involved a pool. I have been a swimming lesson instructor for 10 years and have been a YMCA swim coach for 3 seasons, coaching over 200 children per year. As a graduate of the University of Virginia, I was very dedicated to learning as much as possible. I double majored in Government and Sociology, yet was able to take numerous courses in other areas as well. After earning my undergraduate degree, I decided to pursue graduate school immediately. I believe that first key step to successful teaching is to allows the student convey his/her needs or problem areas. While much can be gained from looking at previous evaluations and test scores, I think that it is crucial to let the student express their needs to make them feel comfortable and build a commitment to the teaching program. In individual sessions, I feel that allowing the student to discuss concepts out loud in addition to completing written exercises and preparing questions facilitates the learning process. I also find that real world analogies are useful ways of linking academic information to previously learned concepts and facilitate the student's understanding. Walking students through diagrams or schematics is also helpful, especially when teaching scientific information.
