Math & Test Prep Tutor

When I was in high school I had a lot of anxiety about math. I went back to college late in life and I was terrified that I would have to take a few math courses to graduate. It wasn't long before math was my favorite class and I changed my major. When I was in school I helped a lot of my classmates with calculus. After I graduated I got a job as a tutor working with high school students on preparation for college entrance exams and mathematics. I found that to be very rewarding.

Although I earned a mathematics degree, I struggled to gain complete competence in algebra and geometry. I believe that my initial struggles have enabled me to become a better teacher because I constantly offer several ways of solving a problem to my students. I do not have to pause and wait for them to comprehend the material the first try. I can simply try re-phrasing or a different method. Also, I am intrinsically patient and a people-pleaser. I love seeing children succeed and value their success.
As a mathematics graduate, I am very detail-oriented and organized. Throughout college I tutored college students in calculus, business math, and statistics. I also tutored high school students in Algebra 1 and 2, Trigonometry, and Geometry. My easy-going and patient teaching style created many referrals that made me a successful and lucrative tutor. Teaching style varies with the subject. For math, I derive how to arrive at the answer without memorizing a process. Once the student has grasped a concept, I provide examples of varying 'difficulty' to show how to use the concept (the student should be able to apply it regardless of the problem’s complexity). With respect to science, visuals are key. Biology can be taught using models/diagrams representing various systems. Chemistry, though, requires a more hands-on approach. Teachers should guide students to the answers, allowing students to learn the most by creating their own diagrams/models. Every student learns differently, so it is necessary to discover how each student learns. Consequently, I tweak my style to suit his/her needs.
Since my sophomore year of high school, I have been helping my peers in subjects related to science and math. I helped the biology teachers cre ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

The majority of my educational experience was acquired along with my teaching license at Colorado State University. This experience includes practicums in Fort Collins schools and 16 weeks of student teaching at Loveland High School. All 3 stints involved either algebra or geometry. While taking courses for my license, I augmented my math knowledge with classes that included calculus, abstract algebra, and non-Euclidean geometry. I also tutored a visually impaired student in her integrated math classes. I am now applying for my license, which I expect to receive in July. My practical math experience includes over 25 years as an engineer in the integrated circuit industry, including 10 years at Ball Aerospace.
I believe that education comprises steps from the known to the unknown in directions that cultivates curiosity. Therefore my first steps are to (1) become well acquainted with ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I taught and tutored students at a Learning Center in Fort Collins for several years. The math curriculum covered basic, intermediate, and advanced math. I also taught study skill subjects. I've helped high school and college students with homework support in physics, chemistry, and advanced high school math. I have also substituted in math and science classes within the Loveland school district.
My teaching style is pretty much dictated by the student and their preferred learning style or combination of styles. For example: a student may just lack confidence, some need help with basic subject skills, or may have a difficult time conceptualizing processes or procedures particularly in math and science.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a mechanical engineering graduate I have had extensive experience in the area of mathematics. Almost everything class that I have taken requires a strong understanding of mathematics. I also have teaching experience as a fluid dynamics teaching assistant.
I believe that the best way of teaching is to treat each individual differently. Different people learn in different ways and sometime it takes patience to find the best possible way to teach. I really enjoy when I see a student that understands the concept were talking about.

I believe that everyone, children and adults alike, can learn through patience, creativity and organized lessons. I make it fun and interesting, and possess many years of interesting real world experiences to draw on to help students understand and learn.
While at Devry Institute of Technology, I was ranked in the top 3% of National Engineering students. This degree required advanced mathematics including Calculus, differential equations, and network synthesis. It also included computer programming and electronic circuit theory and design. In my career I have taught Windows, MS Office, robotics and programming to adults, helped teenagers graduate from high school, and helped my 7 year old daughter learn math.
