I enjoy working with students to help them understand biology and how they participate in a biological world. I believe that the most important concept in teaching is engagement with the student. I strive to engage students in biology by exploring how biological concepts relate to the students life. Genetic diseases, growth and development, and the environment are biological topics that students already participate in; and I strive to teach by relating these topics to the student’s own life. For the last two years I have taught college level biology labs. These have been introductory biology classes with course material beginning with cell biology and ending with ecology. In 2010 I received the Outstanding Teaching Assistant award form the biology department. My experiences are in both biology and environmental science.

I believe that a great educator is a great learner. I am always up for learning new things, so that I am able to teach someone else my new skill. I believe in a hands on approach to learning. The more that can be discovered by doing is much more beneficial than just reading from a text. I am a patient and caring person who is dedicated to taking the time to make sure that your child receives the attention that he or she needs. I have wanted to work with kids all my life. I love the way that they learn and think, and how different it is from adults. I studied Biology at Warren Wilson College in hopes of becoming a high school biology teacher. While at college, I did over one hundred hours of service tutoring and mentoring high school and middle school students in Buncombe County. Having graduated from Appalachian State University in 2009 with a BSc. in Biology/Ecology, as well as an internship at the Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, Florida, I've returned back to Asheville to find employment. Since childhood, my hunger for knowledge has driven me to study and learn about almost as much as I possibly could. My high estimation of learning has often led me to help others to learn whenever I can. Always drawn to math and science, I pursued chemistry in college and received my B.S. from North Carolina State University in Chemistry in 2002. In grade school and high-school I was always looked to by my fellow students for help and explanation of many topics. I recently graduated from the College of Charleston with a MS in Environmental Studies. My educational emphasis was in plant ecology, which provided me with experience in botany, geology, and ecology. Furthermore, I specialized in statistical analysis of biological data. I have extensive computing skills in programs ranging from MS Office to statistical programs including R, SAS, Minitab, and JMP. During my time in the university system, I tutored students in biology, chemistry, ecology, and philosophy. During my graduate career, I taught six semesters of biology to non-science majors. Through this experience, I have developed teaching methods to attempt to reach students with a myriad of different learning styles.
