I enjoy working with students in small groups, or one-on-one, I believe that in order to help a student succeed in a subject matter in is first necessary to show him/her a real life application of the skill set you are teaching. If you are teaching successive addition or subtractions, the use of a checkbook, and mock purchases, will allow the student to see the value of learning the skill as opposed to simply thinking of it as one more "rote task" she/he must learn to get a passing grade.

My initial approach is to ascertain exactly where the student stands prior to starting any course work. Students can be and are easily frustrated with work that is either beyond their ability or more advanced. Frustration can be either eliminated or reduced when students have a better understanding of their work. When teaching Math, my experiences have also taught me that younger students are very hands on and tend to absorb concepts quicker when they are able to manipulate objects enabling them to better understand the concrete.
