Reading and Spelling Tutor: Specializing in Dyslexia/LD/ADHD

I have a degree in Elementary Education and have been certified to use the Barton Reading and Spelling System. I have 3 years of experience in teaching grades K and 1 and 1 year of experience in teaching small group instruction in grades K, 4, and 5. Spelling is one of my top subjects! One of my favorite skills when I returned to graduate school was learning why letters made all the different sounds they do. I love phonics! Whenever I don't have an answer to why a word is spelled the way it is, I make it my challenge to find out! I have used a variety of techniques to teach phonics: repetitive strategies, making it entertaining with drama or rhymes, or using manipulatives to build words and focus on the significance of each individual letter.

I have taught in a first and second grade classroom for ten years, and served as a Reading Specialist for k-5 for seven. I have discovered that the most successful way to teach a child how to read is gaining their interest and full attention, while observing what learning style is best for each individual child. While teaching I use an assortment of manipulatives, repetitive phonics instruction, and books! Whatever works for your child, works for me! This is my first year not teaching in the public schools, and I am very familiar with the assessments and expectations.
