I believe all students can learn and use my training and experience to adapt my teaching strategies to individual learning styles. Using student interests can help direct teaching that improves students’ enjoyment of learning. For instance, when teaching reading to boys I have found that they often like to read more factual reading material about sports, science, history, mechanics, etc. Student interests change as they get older and reading material needs to be age appropriate. After I received my degree in Elementary Education, I was a substitute teacher in IA for one year. I then worked, taught and advised at a small private college in Iowa. In the past, I have made significant impacts on children as well as adults. For example I taught a group of Buddhist monks who had never learnt English previously, and who were rejected by other teachers. I began with teaching the monks the alphabet. By the end of the year, these monks exceeded the expectations set out for them. Another example is when two parents who never spoke English, wanted me to tutor their daughter in English. I went above and beyond my call and taught the child not only English grammar but introduced the child to English Literature. Years later, when I met the mother of the child, she profusely thanked me for teaching her daughter English Literature.
