As a graduate of Indiana University and a current law student at the Ave Maria School of Law, I was and still very much am driven by a desire to learn and share that knowledge with those around me. I earned a BA in Political Science and a Minor in International Studies with a concentration in Human Rights. These two degrees have helped me gain an understanding of how the world of politics works, and its global impact. Because of my major, I have acquired a great deal of experience in writing essays and preparing presentations. My vocabulary and grammatical skills have grown extensively during my time at Indiana and now at Ave Maria. I have tutored students, including my own sisters, in English, history, and social sciences.
My teaching style consists of finding that unique style that will suit each individual student. Growing up, I noticed that it was very hard for certain students ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am presently teaching at the College level in the fields of Humanities and Philosophy. I am also tutoring at the tutoring center in Mathematics and the classes I am teaching. I have high expectation for my students and try to push them in order to get the best out of them. I have also being tutoring French (my native language) to a high school student for 2007- 2009. The student was a beginner with very little knowledge of the language. I was able to help the student sustain at the class level (at the Lab school of University of Chicago) a fast intense pace. I have also tutored Hebrew to children from 1st to 8th grade. I believe I am very patient and firm at the same time

A Little Bit About Me...

I first question the students in what they already know to see the areas that need less instruction. Then I ask them problems from their school texts and see how they do. This will give me some knowledge of where the student is failing and the area that needs more support. I then ask them at the session's end if they learned something and how that makes them feel. This is most important because if the student does not feel that they are learning and what the knowledge can be used for, they will loose interest and not pay attention in class. This is why many fail technical courses because unlike other subjects, math and science builds upon itself so if you do not learn the basics first, the next topics will be harder to grasp.

Generally, I'm a constructivist, and I believe the best method of tutoring is providing a completely individuated scaffold for any student. While I was raised in old-school education, I believe that some of the newer techniques of education through hands-on, the use of digital technology, and through writing across the curriculum are effective for many students.
I have two bachelor degrees, one in computer science, the other in mathematics with a type 09 cert (6-12). I belong to Mensa and the NCTM, and have excellent English and decent Spanish speaking and writing skills. I have taught and tutored in mathematics and computer science for quite awhile, and I earned a 95% on my PSAT and a 32 on my ACT.

In my experience I have discovered that it is better for the student, whether he or she is at elementary or university level, to come up to his or her own conclusions and answers. My style of teaching does not involve doing the work for the student, rather I like to say that I provide the necessary information and aid to point the student in the right direction. This in some cases can take a lot of time and patience, but in the end one learns better when he or she does things himself instead of someone doing it for him. I also believe that one of the most important things to do initially when teaching new students is to create a friendly environment, where the student feels at ease with asking absolutely any question pertaining to the coursework. A student will not listen to a tutor who he or she cannot speak to on a friendly level or respect. I guess to boil everything down, my approach ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that the role of a teacher is to capture the curiosity of students by providing them with lessons and activities that require them to think outside of the box. Such activities should be hands-on and encourage the students to use their senses. I agree with John Dewey, the famous education philosopher, who believes that it is beneficial when teachers use experiential learning because it engages students and presents them with direct experience and focused reflection, which in turn, increases knowledge, develops skills, and clarifies values. I believe that when teachers provide students with hands-on activities, they have a better chance of becoming actively engaged in each lesson.
I am an energetic and dedicated teacher who strives to encourage students to go beyond their very best by creating a positive and respectful learning environment. I establish high expectations for ... read more

As an Electrical Engineer, I am very capable in all areas of Math and Science. I have tutored family memebers for many years in these subjects and have acted as an independent contractor for high schools in the area as well. I feel my approach to the subjects and personal disposition, make the subject matter easier to grasp. My college level courses gave me a deeper understanding of all math related topics, which makes it easier to convey these topics in understandable terms.
I love to see people grasping the simplest approach. I begin with an overview of what, exactly, is the goal and why we are doing it. I feel step by step methods, with easy to remember techniques, are best to achieving the final result. "Hands on" is definitely the approach, once the goal and methods have been established. Reiteration and practice help make problem solving achievable, and reasonably fun.

More About This Tutor...

The advantage of one-on-one tutoring is the productive, personal relationship that arises between tutor and student. As a tutor, I use this relationship to make lessons more fun and more significant. Rather than providing a mundane and meaningless list of facts, I explain the significance of the material by linking specific principles to larger themes. Towards these ends, I adjust my tutoring style to meet each student's academic and personal needs. I listen to my students, encouraging them to ask questions about the material I present. My background in mathematics enables me to provide difficult challenges for even the most able student, but I am also patient and thorough enough to get a struggling student back on track.
While pursuing my honors degree in mathematics at the University of Chicago, I supported myself through numerous tutoring jobs. I have taught mathematics to stude ... read more

I began my teaching career as a tutor for first grade ESL students. The following year I was hired by the Chicago Public School system as a third grade teacher, where I taught for six years. Since leaving, I have worked as a substitute-teacher for several school districts where I am currently employed.
When I was a classroom teacher, I tried as much as possible to individualize my instruction. I would begin each lesson with whole class instructions, but once the students began the work, I would move around the room in order to give more focused attention to those that required it. My classroom always focused on personal progress rather than comparisons. I believe that learning is most likely to occur when students believe in their own ability to learn and are able to discuss and reflect on their own learning.

A Little Bit About Me...

When it comes to starting a new subject, I start with questions to stimulate minds first. I start from the last step, example: How can we do elbow flexion? Then elbow joint constituents and their relation to each other Then the origin and insertion of the "Brachialis" as well as its nerve and blood supply.... I think this works for almost 70% of students. Some have a special aproach that can be discovered in their response to a general question like "What can you see through this window"? Such an answer could tell wheather they focus on the large image or on the details, wheather they get impressed by colors or movements..etc.
