A Little Bit About Me...

Ever since I was little I loved helping other people with school. I spent my summer with my aunt teaching English to Spanish speaking natives and my cousins. Even though I can teach well with large groups I have always felt a child learns best one-on-one. It eliminates competition and helps the child develop confidence in himself and the desire to learn. I like to find the area where a child is struggling and come up with a creative fun way that allows them to learn but also the encourages them to continue working on their own when I am not there. I also believe that it is important to involve the family in order to help the child grow. Whether it is working with them or just encouraging their progress. A good solid understanding of knowledge acquired is the foundation to success in the future.

I have a Florida (K-6) Certificate and Middle School Certification for English and Social Studies. I am an educator with many talents, which include excellent oral and written communication, creativity, interpersonal skills, and computer skills. My enthusiasm and love of learning excites my students to learn along with me as we explore a topic. I was a Substitute Teacher for Lake Mary Preparatory School and the Chicago Public Schools. I believe everyone will respond well to individualized instruction when the tutor studies the student's learning style and offers the information in the form best suited to each learner. I am patient and encouraging with students. I work hard to find ways to present a subject so that each learner will find it interesting.
I am the author of five historical novels and a number of articles, poems and short stories. I occasionally do short “residences” teaching Language Arts and Drama to special needs students in k-12 schools for VSA Arts of Florida. My graduate studies emphasized American and Tudor/Stuart History. My doctorate included a Criminal Justice minor. I regularly teach writing and grant writing seminars to adults, usually through libraries on weekends or in the evening.

Here is Some Good Information About Florida Writes Tutoring

The Florida Writing Assessment was implemented in grades 4, 8, and 10 as required by a law passed by the 1990 legislature. Does your student need a tutor? Beginning in 2010, each essay was scored by one rater. In previous years, two raters were used and the scores were averaged. Prior to 2010, a student could have received a half-point score, such as 4.5; whereas since 2010, no half-point scores are possible. Additionally, beginning in 2010, each student within the same grade level was required to write an essay using the same mode of writing (narrative, expository, or persuasive).
