It is easier to assess where the child is. I believe that the basics are essential to moving forward in education. Memorization of math facts makes it easier for a child to learn new material because he isn't bogged down. I don't believe enough emphasis is placed on arithmetic in today's schools. I must admit that my experience with teaching is limited, however I love to sit down with groups of children and help them to discover new concepts and ways to learn the subject matter. I taught five year olds for two years in Sunday School. Every week was a challenge to help them to pay attention and listen well. I grew up reading the nutritional panel on everything. I was absolutely fascinated how the body used the food that we eat to derive the energy and perform the tasks necessary for life.
