A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated from Ronald Reagan High School with a 4.6 GPA in the second graduating class ('08), then went on the NC State University to study Engineering, where I jumped in between various Engineering programs for three years before simply deciding to take a break and truly figure out what I want to study. While this may deter several people from choosing me, I know that if you met me and/or any of my teachers from any grade level, they/I could certainly set the record straight, as I am quite a smart person, I have simply struggled with getting my life into an appropriate schedule. This is because between high school, my extra curriculars (captain of the drumline for three years and a captain of the lacrosse team for three years), and my parents, my life was completely structured for me, so what little free time I had was easy to budget, this is not the case in high school. I am a ver ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I love to work with students of all ages. I am a patient teacher and try to tailor my teaching style to the progress of my student. I prefer to promote understanding through the use of work sheets, tutorials, and real world examples, rather then simply relying on memorization. I have a good sense of humor and believe that constructive learning environments are both challenging and light-hearted.
I studied creative writing at the SC Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities in Greenville SC. There I studied poetry, play writing, grammar, editing, fiction, and creative nonfiction. I won two national scholastic writing awards for my writing. I also studied at Rice University which is a highly selective university in Houston Texas. I am a disciplinarian. I have an excellent ability to gain a students attention, keep it and the results of my students have been well above average. I have a knack to bring into the classroom, outside events (latest ball games, Olympics, etc.) to establish a 'bond' between myself and the student. This allows me to gain their confidence as well as not create a bored atmosphere. I find this very important, especially with the more difficult students.
As seen from above, I have valid tutoring experience in both middle grades and HS. I was in the student teaching program at Wake Forest and upon graduation, I was a substitute teacher in the Winston-Salem, Forsyth County School system. I also participated in the Junior Achievement program in the Piedmont NC region for over 5 years. I am currently a tutor with the "No Child Left Behind Program."

I have taught French at the middle and high school levels for ten years. During this time I had the experience of teaching 7th through 12th grade French courses. Most recently, I taught ESL to Korean and Chinese students in order to support their 9th and 10th grade English courses. I have also tutored students in French, English, and in homework assistance in an after school program for students from 4th to 8th grade. These students struggled with completing homework due to learning differences and difficulties. I have to say that my most gratifying experience has been tutoring students one-on-one. This is where we can accomplish the most, and a student can receive the education and attention he or she needs.
I have noticed over the years that many students can identify their specific needs when it comes to learning. I see myself as a facilitator in helping students to learn while ... read more

I like to observe children to determine what learning styles best fit their personalities and strengths. I believe in the capabilities of all children, when their teachers find the proper ways to motivate and support their learning. I find that building a trusting relationship in which students feel comfortable asking questions and thinking critically are best for making gains.
I have been a classroom teacher for the past four years in both elementary and middle school. Both of my parents are educators, so I spent a great deal of time tutoring and volunteering in schools prior to my teaching career. I also have a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership from Florida Atlantic University. My strengths are in the areas of language arts, reading, and social sciences.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe all students can learn and achieve academic success. As a patient and caring teacher and tutor, I understand that learning is an individual process, so I create lessons, assignments, activities, and environments conducive to each individual student's learning. Furthermore, in addition to teaching students necessary skills to help them achieve academic success, I find it is also important to provide praise and recognition to students for each level of success they acquire. This shows them that they can learn and be successful academically.
I earned a BA and MA in English, which provided me the necessary knowledge to teach literature and writing, and have taken a variety of educational courses that have helped me be a successful tutor and teacher. First and foremost, I love working with students. I believe all students have an ability to learn once you find the way to connect with them. I think the key is in finding that particular connection because each student is gifted in his or her own special way. All people learn differently, and I approach teaching with this understanding and appreciation of the differences in all students and their backgrounds. I think students benefit from a sort of structured guidance that sets them on the right path to learning the material but gives them the room and freedom to feel a sense of empowerment through their own discovery of the embedded lessons. I believe this sense of empowerment and the building of self-esteem through successful learning is a key factor in helping students reach their full potential academically and in life.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have always believed that a good teacher is the best tool to help students learn. Having personal experience with learning disabilities, I do not think that they prevent anyone from learning; rather, they provide students with a better understanding of themselves. Realizing that we all learn differently, I believe that teaching should incorporate multiple methods of presentation. I think that demonstrations and examples, which relate to everyday life, are two of the best methods when learning a new concept. I have experience with children and adults with ADHD and Asperger’s Syndrome, and found they perform best when interested. As a patient and understanding person, I adapt my teaching style to reflect the needs of each student.
As a motivated person, I attended UNCG as an undergraduate and graduate student while working full time. I have received both a BS and MS in Biochemi ... read more

I began tutoring Spanish as an undergraduate twenty-five years ago. In college, graduate school and as a professor I wrote literary analyses in Spanish, English and Portuguese. Many of these papers were written from historical, sociological or psychoanalytic perspectives. I taught all levels of undergraduate Spanish, and some graduate courses. I have taught English as a second language. I have basic vocabuary skills in Arabic, Russian and French and can ask and answer basic questions in Russian and French. I also have a knowledge of the written alphabet in Russian.
My teaching style for Spanish is proficiency-based, culture-based and student-centered. My college students master basic Spanish vocabulary and grammar through writing grocery lists, ordering from a menu, describing how they are feeling, and even decorating skull cookies for the Day of the Dead. On a similar note, I te ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

This month I graduated from Southeastern University magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a minor in history. Throughout my years at Southeastern, I developed a love for teaching and tutoring that grew with every experience. In October of 2008, I began volunteering as a tutor at my school, tutoring college students in English: reading, writing, grammar, literary theory, etc. In January, I was hired as a tutor and began volunteering at the YMCA in Lakeland, FL. Although I have less than a year of experience, I love tutoring and I have received excellent reviews from my students and supervisors alike.
I have been given a few opportunities to teach classes at the college level and I have developed a deep passion for teaching. Tutoring is another passion, because I believe some students simply need one-on-one attention that they may not be able to receive in a c ... read more

My goal is to engage each and every student in the classroom in some aspect of the lesson being conducted. Perhaps I can relate the lesson to experiences in their own lives, or I can tap into their knowledge of, or interest in, a particular subject. Students will not be interested in any lesson if the teacher does not care if they are interested. Students should not be dull-eyed receivers of information that a teacher is megaphoning over their heads: they should be participators in all aspects of the learning process.
The only teaching experience I have is the student teaching I did at Andrews High School in High Point in 1993 as part of the teaching program at UNC-Greensboro. For several months I taught American Literature and Composition. I have also conducted training classes on new procedures in previous jobs.
