I am a firm believer that the science subjects are not as difficult as many students are afraid they are. In my past tutoring experiences I like to allow the student to explain to me in their terms their understanding of the subject. I then fill in the gaps or revise their understanding. In order to move forward in an academic subject, let’s first see where the student is in their understanding of the subject. Perhaps the student's mind is filled with a patch-work of facts and concepts that, together, simply do not make sense. In such a case, the leap from basic memorization to higher-level thinking such as analysis and problem solving will be difficult. But rather than bore the student with things too basic, let's apply what they already know to the unknown. Like any explorer, it becomes fun & exciting to explore the subject; to use one's imagination and creativity to solve surprising problems; to build confidence and interest.
