Personal and direct. I am extremely patient.
I have been a probation officer for 8+ years. I have worked directly with clients in a teaching/learning atmosphere. I see myself as more of a teacher than a law enforcement officer. Experienced teaching students with learning differences

Students learn in a positive learning environment. Everyone is unique thus everyone has unique learning styles. I focus on the positives each student has achieved and then, together the student and I strengthen the areas that need improvements. For example, there has been a recent emphasis on time test for all math operations. Personally, I believe this is testing the student test taking skills more than their math ability. I believe this can cause test anxiety issues. As a substitute teacher, I have reviewed the results of students’ test and made custom flashcards for the few math facts they need to memorize. I put them in an envelope for them with a note to memorize one or two at a time. I suggest placing one at their placemat and the other math flashcard where brush their teeth.

Helping our children become Global Learners!

Set Realistic Goals and Rewards Create realistic, individual goals for all of your students. It's nice to have a classroom goal so students feel like they are working together, encouraging one another. However, it's more important to give each student an attainable goal that's personalized for their educational needs, such as completing homework assignments on time or checking over an assignment before they turn it in. Providing students with a personalized, attainable goals makes them feel like they can succeed and doesn't overwhelm them. Discuss with students the rewards for achieving their goals. Start with small increments. For example, two weeks of success is rewarded with lunch in the classroom. After a month, offer a special prize. Collect small objects such as pencils, stickers, glow in the dark rings or other trinkets for prizes. Meeting their goal for six weeks earns them a fr ... read more

My comments on tutoring ADD/ADHD : I have a Master's degree in Special Education grades Kindergarten-12th grade.

My teaching style varies from student to student. I believe in group work, I believe in independent work, and I believe that all students should have the opportunity to expand their minds. I allow students to research, explore, and analyze answers on their own while offering them support and encouragement.
After graduating from college with a Bachelor's degree in Middle School Education, I taught for 8 years in a middle school in North Carolina. During this time, I went back to school and received a Master's degree in Special Education. I have taught grades 6th, 7th, and 8th. More About This Tutor...

Although I have a degree in Liberal Studies and Criminal Justice, I have always loved math. Several years after graduating from college, I was offered the opportunity to teach math at Glenville High School in Cleveland. I genuinely love teaching; I only left Glenville because of the cutbacks in 2004. Since that time I have continued to teach at various high schools and with the Baldwin-Wallace College Upward Bound Program. I am able to teach math, from Pre-Algebra through Calculus. I have also tutored all levels of math and continue to do so. I tutor the students in the Upward Bound Program, as well as those at the high schools I’ve taught at. Additionally, I tutor for the Ohio Graduation Test. I am currently working on my Masters in Educational Technology, as well as a teaching license in mathematics (grades 7-12).

More About This Tutor...

As a great advocate of education, I aim to offer my students with the best learning experience possible. For that reason, while tutoring in college, I started reading and learning about the many teaching styles used in schools. This helped me find my own teaching style that focuses on each student individually. I try to mix several teaching styles in order for the student to understand and feel comfortable with the material. However, based on my own personal experiences, the teaching style that provided the best results to my students was the demonstrator teaching style. I use audio, video, role playing, personal experiences, class discussions, brainstorming, critical thinking, and other direct observations to allow students to use all their senses in their learning experience. I try to plan my lessons and educational activities in a manner that tends to simplify and clearly represent th ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Learning is always easier when it is fun and interesting. In any given teaching situation I look for ways to add zest to learning. At the outset of tutoring I do an assessment of where students are currently achieving in a specific subject area, and identify skills that they may be lacking. Next, I develop a learning plan with specific goals. This becomes the basis for a learning contract between myself and the person seeking tutoring. Learning is best achieved in an interactive teaching style where students are encouraged to ask questions and participate in problem solving. I am a patient person who believes that all students can successfully learn.
My undergraduate years at Princeton University instilled in me a passion for learning and a personal commitment to academic excellence. Most of my adult work life has been focused on coaching individuals to overcome handicaps and maxi ... read more
