As an educator, I love teaching and working with students of all ages. Through my experience, I have learned and believe that all children can succeed academically. Beginning as a student working towards my TEFL certificate, I volunteered at Somali Adult Literacy Training and organization which teaches English to Somalis in the Twin Cities. I continued volunteering with the same organization for 3 years. I have worked with a variety of skill levels and taught students on my own. Additionally, I have completed a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies at North Central University. My fields were Education and English, but I have taken Calculus, Physics and Chemistry, and several years of art classes. I also study Spanish for four years. When I tutor students I take the time to get to know each student on an individual basis and as a unique person. I make it a priority to determine their learning style and use that to implement a plan. I try and understand the reason they are having problems in their studies and then execute a plan in which they can succeed. I create study guides, review questions, and sample test questions for the students as well. In addition, a tutor can be a positive role model in student's lives and serve as a mentor and can be a person who the students can count on to answer questions. I attended the University of North Dakota for 4 years and in that time received a BA in Anthropology which has provided me the experience and knowledge of helping people in holistic ways. I now attend graduate school to obtain an MS in Applied Anthropology. Just about every semester I have written a 7-15 page research paper and have written several other essays, reports, and assignments in general.
