I have a love for learning and teaching!

I have been teaching special education for six years. I taught special education to kindergarten through third grade in a Montessori school for four years. I have experience in teaching students with disabilities in reading, writing, and math. Many of my students have also been diagnosed with ADHD/ADD, autism, learning disabilities, and emotional impairments. I am currently teaching my second year at a center-based school for autism. In my teaching career, I have used a variety of hands-on material and visuals. I am also a native German speaker. I grew up in Northern Germany and I am therefore familiar with the German culture as a child as well as an adult.

My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : Reading and spelling is taught using the Orton-Gillingham approach. This method is perfect for students with Learning Disabilities, dyslexia, ADHD/ADD, and language processing problems. I use materials from the Wilson Reading System for their ease and low cost to parents. I am a Michigan certified teacher in the area of Learning Disabilities, Secondary English, and Secondary Social Studies. I have 22 year of experience working with children and adults with language processing problems. I have been rated "Highly Effective" every year. My goal is 100% fluency. References upon request. No students under 10 years old.

My teaching style is very hands on. I employ a visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile (VAKT) method for remembering the rules of the English language. This method is described as "direct" or hands on and one-on-one. I only work with one student at a time.

I have been a tutor for 23 years and I have taught Adult Basic Education for 12 years. I am still continuing my education to receive a Masters degree and plan to get my PhD. I work for a community college and have done advising, enrollment, testing, phone directory, and student sevices. I have attended many professional development workshops on education.
Critical thinking skills and untraditional ways are what I focus on. However the way someone learns, I will try to set the individual up to show how they learn and work with them. I retired in June after 32 years.
