My comments on tutoring Literature : I enjoy deconstructing the building blocks of various kinds of literature (i.e. how it's structured and written). Whether is it an assigned class reading, an assigned home reading, or one I suggest, I can help the individual look at literature in a more healthily critical way. After understanding the individual's goals, I can construct an approach to help them reach them! If you have any questions, please, ask!

My approach is one that is peculiar to each of my students. As an auto-didactic learner, I believe that everyone has their own way of learning. Therefore, I use an approach that I feel works well for each of my students, with regard to whether a student thinks abstractly or concretely, for example. With so many possible goals, it is important to be flexible to work with each student's learning style. I present concepts with the idea that experience is the key to learning. I strive to create a warm atmosphere that allows students to feel comfortable with making mistakes, with making progress and with being themselves. I see the process as a wonderful opportunity for students to gain knowledge and awareness and to personally develop. With my patience, positive energy, personal insight and passion for working with people, I help my students work towards progress while having a fun time ... read more

My comments on tutoring Literature : Skillful.

I like a conversational, relaxed style in which the students are encouraged to speak English as much as possible. I often have students repeating useful, whole sentences and phrases.Mistakes are okay! Humor is okay! Questions are encouraged.
I am a very experienced teacher of English as a Second Language (ESL). I served for three years as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Afghanistan and the Fiji Islands. I also taught ESL in Japan, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. I have also taught ESL for many years here in the USA to both adults and children. I have experience with many foreign cultures.

A Little Bit About Me...

Over one year's experience tutoring writing at the college level. 8 months as a peer tutor at College of the Mainland, and 3 months self-employed. A variety of subjects covered using MLA and APA writing styles. Students that were helped ranged from collegiate high school to returning adult students. Creative and technical writing also covered.
Instead of time-consuming lesson plans, my sessions are based on the student's daily needs with a focus on any trouble areas encountered. The direction of the session is influenced by the student's opinions.

UT-SAN ANTONIO STUDENT WITH DIVERSE SKILL SET

I tend to be really flexible and try to adapt my teaching style to the learning style of the student. For students who tend to be more tactile, I might have them handle apples if a math problem references apples. If a student is working on a writing assignment, I will offer suggestions (such as marking spelling/grammar/punction mistakes) and help them learn how to correct the errors so they won't continue to make the same errors in the future.

Conquer Education!

I have my Bachelors Degree in Professional Writing with a minor in Creative Writing. In other words, I've suffered through hundreds of grueling English assignments. I know the pain, and I know how to get you through it. I've worked for magazines, taken teaching courses, written many stories, worked as a copy writer, and I do volunteer teaching at a church every Sunday.

A Little Bit About Me...

My missionary experiences informed me of one idea: people are important and they have to be considered person-by-person. Those experiences have led me to take a teaching philosophy and teaching practice that is person-centric. I work to understand the rhetorics, theories, practices, and experiences that inform each student and the classroom as a whole. In practice, this manifests in extensive talking and co-writing (on daily assignments) to assess where exactly these students are at and how I can help them. I believe that each student, each individual, has the desire and capacity to learn, so I am constantly working to demystify composition so they can truly see how language can inform them and make their lives better.
Applicable to this job, I remember my high school years and the processes I had during my English and Composition assignments. I completed an English Bachelor’s degr ... read more

Working with kids is my fascination. I believe that teaching children should not be standing up and lecturing or simply explaining something. Its about getting to know the students, making the students feel important and unique in their own special way and most importantly I believe a teacher should be a role model. The teacher must adjust his or her teaching approach to the way the student will learn what’s being taught to them not the other way around. Everything should be done in the interest of the children and their academic success. All students are different and they all have different learning styles. It is the teacher’s duty to find out what leaning style the student holds and target that teaching approach.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching credentials are in English and education. However... At the middle school level and high school level, I have taught/tutored English composition, geography, history, social studies, government, economics, and computer applications. At the college and adult level, I have taught/tutored English composition, oral communications (public speaking and debate), business and business administration, resume writing, advanced computer applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and the Open Office Suite). Having been CEO of a corporation in the public arena, do not expect me to be your normal indoctrinated politically correct public school teacher or college professor. Judge me by the results.
Whether it is in front of a class of 40 or one-on-one, I have been endowed not only with the talent to teach, but also with the God-given ability to motivate. Mo ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I began my teaching career in South San Antonio, teaching at both the elementary level (K and 3) and at the middle school (6-8). At Shepard Middle School, I implemented a writing program that was credited with bringing standardized (TAAS at the time) scores up substantially, garnering our school a large monetary award from the state. After twelve years, I moved to the North East ISD, where I taught English at both Nimitz Middle School and Barbara Bush Middle School. I retired last June, but I still love working with children of all ages.
I believe in relationships first. If a teacher knows her/his students, she/he can usually find what motivates them and use that to gain their trust and interest. Having taught for as long as I have, I know of many different ways to reach students. A positive attitude and an easy going personality go a long way, and I am known for both.

More About This Tutor...

I began teaching as an Instructor and Dean's Fellow in Rhetoric and Composition and in English literature courses while a graduate student at the University of Iowa, consistently earning student praise in end-of-course evaluations. I bring the depth and breadth of full baccalaureate majors in Greek, Latin and British literature to my teaching and research, and am adept at assisting students who have not benefited from exposure to advanced essay composition. I feel I am specifically gifted in empowering my students to work hard at improving their essay skills. It is, after all, the essay that constitutes all college-level discourse, and for this reason it is imperative that college-bound students be well-honed writers of expository prose.
I have a reputation for making often difficult and recondite literature accessible and appealing, while candidly admitting its rigors. My perso ... read more
