I earned a Bachelor of Science from The Ohio State University in 1984. My subjects of passion were math and science and I enjoy working with children who struggle in those areas. I have home schooled my son through the end of 12th grade and he was ready for college freshman classes at age 15. Starting in his second grade year, we were joined by a student who has learning disabilities. He also thrived in the tutorial teaching environment. My desire is to work with children who really desire to learn but need that extra time and encouragement to succeed.
I have experience working with both audio/visual learners and a kinesthetic/tactile learner. I have taught ESL classes and done individual tutoring, as well as both group and one-on-one instruction in grammar and composition. I have tutored for SAT, ACT, TOEFL, TOEIC, ISEE and entrance exams. I have created my own materials for such tutoring but also use books available commercially.
I am interactive and student-centered. I see where the student's strengths lie and build from there. We do homework and tests together, and I move from a coaching role to an observational one, only coaching occasionally as necessary. I began working with children who were diagnosed with autism my first year of college (I did this for 7 years). I felt a sense of accomplishment as I watched them grow as people. I realized through these experiences that I wanted to help people learn and become accomplished. Later, I decided to student teach in graduate school. I taught three different writing courses over three years, including this past year as a part-time instructor. While I enjoyed my time teaching in a college classroom, I found myself making the most headway during conference time. In addition, I also worked as a writing tutor at MU's writing center.
