During and after my college years, I have always had an interest in helping others become better writers. For three years I worked as a tutor at Alfred University's writing center. I also have eight years of experience teaching junior high English at a rigorous school. The school I teach in has a back-to-basics curriculum with a focus on the rules of grammar and writing. I not only taught in the classroom, but also dedicated my time after school to tutoring individual students.
I believe that all students can achieve in an academically and behaviorally rigorous environment. With the help of parental involvement and tutoring, and without watering down curriculum, any child can be successful if the effort is made. A Little Bit About Me...

I have experience working with both audio/visual learners and a kinesthetic/tactile learner. The kinesthetic/tactile learner had learning disabilities akin to ADD, but still did very well in the small group environment. I believe that children who want to learn will do so given the proper setting and sufficient time to succeed. I have very high patience for children who try hard and still struggle, but I do expect the student to give their best effort at each task.

I began working with children who were diagnosed with autism my first year of college (I did this for 7 years). I felt a sense of accomplishment as I watched them grow as people. I realized through these experiences that I wanted to help people learn and become accomplished. Later, I decided to student teach in graduate school. I taught three different writing courses over three years, including this past year as a part-time instructor. I give my students the benefit of the doubt. In the beginning and throughout the school year, I assume that my students are giving me their best. It may not be at grade level, and may be sloppy and hard to read but it's what they can do right now. Then, the hard work begins! My students are so proud when a few short months later, they can write a little neater and it's more legible. They can read those big hard words that stumped them just a little bit ago and understand a little more of what they are reading. I'm proud too, that they continue to give me their best!
