I have experience working with both audio/visual learners and a kinesthetic/tactile learner. The kinesthetic/tactile learner had learning disabilities akin to ADD, but still did very well in the small group environment. I believe that children who want to learn will do so given the proper setting and sufficient time to succeed. I firmly believe that it is the responsibility of the teacher to find a way to present material so it is understood by the student. Too many schools criticize a child's ability to learn when the child doesn't respond to the school's one method of teaching. I enjoy finding ways to make concepts simple and fun for the child. I have been tutoring my step-son in reading, writing and math for two years. He was diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of six so we opted to have a tutor work with him. After two years of outside tutoring, his mother and I decided that I would begin tutoring him. I had his tutor instruct me on his methods and various tools he used for teaching a dyslexic child. I then took over the tutoring and have been tutoring 2-3 times a week ever since. He is now 10 and doing very well in school. I plan to work with him as long as necessary. I also currently volunteer at his school, helping with the 3rd grade Math Club. I prefer to tutor 3rd through 6th grade age children but will consider other school age children.
