A Little Bit About Me...

I have experience working with both audio/visual learners and a kinesthetic/tactile learner. The kinesthetic/tactile learner had learning disabilities akin to ADD, but still did very well in the small group environment. I believe that children who want to learn will do so given the proper setting and sufficient time to succeed. I have very high patience for children who try hard and still struggle, but I do expect the student to give their best effort at each task.
I earned a Bachelor of Science from The Ohio State University in 1984. My subjects of passion were math and science and I enjoy working with children who struggle in those areas. I have home schooled my son through the end of 12th grade and he was ready for college freshman classes at age 15. Starting in his second grade year, we were joined by a student who has learning disabilities. He also thrived in the tutori ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am interactive and student-centered. I see where the student's strengths lie and build from there. We do homework and tests together, and I move from a coaching role to an observational one, only coaching occasionally as necessary. We work not only on the subject matter, but techniques which improve comprehension, retention, organization and motivation.
I have taught and tutored both children and adults in a wide variety of situations, from job training and test preparation to tutoring for a specific subject. I have taught ESL classes and done individual tutoring, as well as both group and one-on-one instruction in grammar and composition. I have tutored for SAT, ACT, TOEFL, TOEIC, ISEE and entrance exams. I have created my own materials for such tutoring but also use books available commercially.

More About This Tutor...

I volunteer for HOBY (Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Seminar) every year. This program pushes facilitation, which is what I strive to do. I like to try to facilitate and push my students to ask questions and talk to me as a peer. I always try to give at least three compliments to every criticism because students are often too hard on themselves. For some reason, most of the students I have worked with have had an English teacher along the line who has made them feel "stupid." It is amazing what boosting confidence can do! I like to understand where students are coming from and what their specific needs are so I can address them in a way that best fits their learning style and experiences.
I began working with children who were diagnosed with autism my first year of college (I did this for 7 years). I felt a sense of accomplishment as I watched them grow as people. I realized ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As a Yoga Instructor and studio owner over the past ten years, I have held several Teacher Trainings, and taught the Anatomy and Physiology part of all these. First hand, as a single mother, I have raised my son, currently in high school and I have hands on experience raising him and keeping him on track. He is an above average student and I have found that staying involved, asking probing questions and creating a routine have all contributed to his success.
My teaching style is one of encouragement and confidence building. When I have taught Biology to those who don’t understand it, I have found success in trying to relate the science to something that the student can relate. I believe it is important to keep a student progressing and that praise as well as honest feedback can help them achieve this goal. My mother is a life-long teacher and I have learned a lot by being aroun ... read more

My approach to tutoring is based on the belief that science is a fun and interesting subject. I always maintain a positive attitude and attempt to teach science without being boring. I have good communication skills and can work with students in a constructive, encouraging, and non-abrasive manner. As a tutor my job is to connect with my students, make the subject interesting, and relate it to their lives in some way so they are actively involved in the learning process. In my experience this is the best way to help students become successful.
Throughout my educational career I have always enjoyed science classes. Due to this proficiency I was selected as a teacher's assistant for two undergraduate Biology classes. I also took 3 science based education classes. These classes were a great experience where we worked at a local high school with three exceptional science teachers ... read more

During my time at the LRC, I developed a teaching style where I first understood the learning style of the student (i.e. visual or auditory) and then discovered why they wanted tutoring, wanted to focus on, and what they wanted to accomplish. I would then delve into the subject matter at hand, drawing, discussing, or having them draw any specific process or problem. Finally, I would have them tell me what they understood from the process that we just discussed. If I felt the student was confident in their abilities I would test them, if I found that they were not very confident in their abilities, I would discuss the lesson and confirm that they understood. In these cases, I would also try to work on their academic confidence.
From September ‘08 - January ‘10 I was at the UCD – LRC tutoring students in Biology, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Biochemistry doing individual tutorin ... read more
