A Little Bit About Me...

For the first three years out of the university, I was a school librarian, and was board certified K-12 by the Washington State Board of Education as a result of this experience. From 2006-2008, I have been tutoring writing at Northern New Mexico College, from 4th grade remedial level through college papers in all subjects. I am presently working in an Upward Bound program for 9th graders, to help increase their study skills.
I believe that students need to be challenged. When they are highly challenged, they really produce. In my tutoring experience, my students' test scores rose two grade levels in ten weeks because they were challenged. Previously, these students were thought to not be able to speak, read, or write English, and were pre-testing at very low grade levels.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have an Elementary Education Degree from the College of Santa Fe. While persuing my degree I worked a an instructional assistant in an elementary school. The majority of students I worked with were special needs students. This helps me to understand that all students can learn when their needs are meet. I have been tutoring for about three years now. In teaching I am basically a generalist and humanist. My background is in mathematics and the sciences, but with a solid foundation in the humanities. Practically, I have never stopped learning something new and in addition to my formal credential I have done university course work in languages, forestry, animal husbandry, and sports training. Although it took me 15 years to obtain my B.S. in Business Management, I do not view that as a disadvantage. My travels with my military husband enriched my education by enabling me to experience different cultures, and by giving me the opportunity to meet, live among, and work with people of many different backgrounds. I have worked in the Los Alamos school system for the last two years as a Special Education Instructional Assistant, grades 3 through 6, helping children with many types of learning challenges improve their reading, writing, spelling, math, and organizational and social skills.
