My comments on tutoring Poetry : I've taken a few poetry classes and know the ins and outs of most types of poetry.

I am a recent graduate of Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pennsylvania (May 2011). I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a concentration in creative writing. I also have a minor in photography. During my time at Mercyhurst College, I worked as a writing tutor in the school’s writing center. When students entered the center, it was my job to immediately make them feel comfortable by greeting them with a friendly smile and asking what I could help them with. After this, the students’ explained their assignment and expressed any concerns they had or anything their professors wanted them to work on. I then proceeded to read their paper and used my knowledge and experience to work with them to help revise and edit the essay. Although, I have never been in charge of my own class room I consider my teaching style energetic. I love working with students of all ages and find that teaching methods and styles tend to adapt to those individual students. I think it is important to be encouraging and patient with all students. I believe in a hand on approach where students learn from experiences and doing rather than being lectured. A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy working one on one with students because it is allows me to give more in depth and detailed instruction to the student based on his or her learning style. I believe in hands on learning and learning by example. All people have the ability to learn and understand any concept; I work to act as a guide from confused to accomplished.
I have always been interested and active in the education field. I enjoy working individually with students, more so than in a classroom setting. I received a Master's degree in Creative Writing and a Bachelor's in English for Secondary Education, with minors in French and Creative Writing. Young people learn through different ways and means. I try to discern the best method to instruct any particular student with whom I am tutoring at the time. I like to give examples of problems, and "problem solve" with the student through illustrative examples on paper or on the board. I encourage questions and feedback to ensure that the young person is indeed learning "how" to solve a problem, not simply to "get" a solution. A student's practical demonstration of problem solving is the best gauge to determine if that student is indeed learning or not.
