A Little Bit About Me...

As a mathematics major, I worked in the math lab all four years of my college experience. I would tutor others with their math and help students study for exams. I have also tutored in junior high settings and this past summer I tutored a young girl in 7th grade math. I have also tutored while in high school.

Micro welding had to teach others how to set machines and run them. I built parts which went to the moon, had to teach the others how they were made. Owned an upholstery business and taught people how to sew, cut, and hang the materials on the furniture. I helped my sons and later my granddaughters with home work. I like to give examples of problems, and "problem solve" with the student through illustrative examples on paper or on the board. I would say that it is a little more toward laid back. Being over 6" tall, stocky, pushing hard, being an ogre, hard-nosed, that isn't going to work for me. People have a tendency to be a bit intimidated and fearful because of my size. I will use it to my advantage if it is necessary, or becomes necessary, but I've found being a little more quiet, reserved and coaxing the student to initiate the discussion is a little better. Ask leading questions, adjust and proceed, based on their response.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe in trying to help kids learn the big picture. Kids are highly intelligent and are capable of handling large amounts of information. This does not mean that we teach the same amount of accounting information to 5th grades as we do 11th grades. Just that we can give them a general outline for the 5th grades and a more detailed version for the 11th grades. My volunteering began in 1993 when I was an officer at the Indiana University Bloomington chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, the honorary accounting society. I still remember going to the Boys and Girls Club to tutor each week. When I got the opportunity to work with the Junior Achievement organization while working in Butler, I jumped for joy. For 8 years I was a volunteer teacher for all three schools (elementary, middle, and high). My company closed down and I had to leave the Eastside JA board and the opportunity to help children learn.
