Specializing in SAT Preparation

I truly enjoy teaching and working with people; I am very personable, positive, and encouraging. I will also make the subject interesting and fun.
I am starting my own SAT prep company this fall (see achieveexcellencehawaii.com). I am currently the SAT prep teacher (and upper school science teacher) at American Renaissance Academy in Kapolei. I have been tutoring various subjects for over 10 years, have about 6 years of teaching experience (with a focus on math, science, and ESL), and have taught numerous SAT prep classes and tutored a handful of students in SAT prep for other companies. I have been blessed to help many students raise their total SAT scores 300-600 points. I have a Master's Degree in Divinity from Azusa Pacific University (CA) and Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biology from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

I prioritize learning the fundamentals. I also teach study habits and strive to help the student so that they can continue to excel without my help.
Throughout high school I was a teaching assistant at Iolani during the summer for English Language Learners. While attending Harvard University, I volunteered in a after school program in Boston's Chinatown community teaching second and third graders from low income families. There I helped them with homework and developed projects with fellow counselors to enrich their learning. Throughout my whole learning career I have tutored many of my own friends primarily in math and science.

My comments on tutoring PSAT : Having taught SAT verbal for many years, I welcome the opportunity to work with students in preparing for the PSAT.

I consider myself a facilitator of knowledge, encouraging my students to discover answers for themselves. To me, the process of acquiring knowledge is as important as the knowledge itself. With gentle prodding, building on what students already know, they progress quickly through problems and/or assignments. Students know much more than they think they know. Because they are doing their own thinking, they're already invested in the process. When their answers come, they own them. This increases their confidence in tackling more challenging work & in realizing their own potential. The knowledge is out there, waiting to be discovered. It is this discovery that makes teaching and learning so rewarding.
I have taught over 20 years in private & public schools in Hawaii & one summer in Michigan. My experience ranges from elementary to college level. I have also tutored SAT pre ... read more

I am currently finishing my first year in my graduate program, MEdT Program (Masters in Education Teaching). I have so far spent 12hrs a week in the classroom for the past year. I have taught several solo lessons a week while at Campbell High School and Ilima Intermediate. I am efficient in one-on-one teaching situations students who need extra attention and assistance. I specialize in Social Studies subjects, but am proficient in secondary level math (Algebra) and some natural science. I enjoy working with young learners very much and would love to tutor outside of the classroom setting.
My teaching style is based on an inquiry-based learning method. I do not give students answers. I ask them the right questions to get them to figure out the answer themselves. I also encourage the student to ask the right questions themselves as well. I am very patient and encouraging. I am a ... read more

I have had many years of leadership experience. I believe this leadership experience allows me to work well with and lead others. In college, I participated in several cultural clubs on campus. I was the Fundraising Chairperson, Luau Food Chairperson, and eventually the President of the Hawaii-Pacific Islanders Club. My Bachelor of Arts in International Relations comprised of reading and writing-intensive courses that focused on subjects including history and political science. In addition, continuous progress on my 30-page thesis paper required for my major has refined my research and writing skills. While attending St. Francis High School, I assisted teaching reading and music to preschoolers at least two hours a week.
Based off my leadership experience, I believe the best way to help others improve in anything is to individualize their needs. In order to do this, it is best to ... read more

Do your science or math classes have you frustrated? These subjects can be complex, but I have over six years of experience turning them into manageable, even fun, topics. I use analogies, case studies, current events, and that student’s particular interests to keep subjects interesting. I tailor my lessons to the unique learning styles of each student. My students learn by gaining a true understanding of the subject and not by regurgitation of random facts – memorized information alone tends to be forgotten immediately after the test. In addition, my background in journalism has honed my ability to synthesize information and convey complex information in a straightforward manner.
Over the past six years, I have been a collegiate instructor, a private tutor, and a tutor for elementary, middle school, and high school students in science, math, reading comprehension, writing, a ... read more

Each student is unique and has their own learning style. It is vital to teach the person according to their unique needs and abilities. I am a compassionate, caring teacher who loves children and also the material. I also believe that a big block to learning is often either confidence or study methods they have been taught in past. Through guidance and encouragement, these both can be greatly improved. I work very well both one on one and in groups.
I graduated Summa Cum Laude from every degree I have. I tutored students maths/sciences for 8 years, and I also taught High School English for one year. Teaching is as much a process as learning. It can be carried out most effectively only when it's driven by self-motivation. I'm in teaching because I want to be. It brings me joy... gets me excited in the morning going to work. Such zest in easily reflected in the way I teach. My students feel my enthusiasm; they witness my taking a personal interest in their learning. In a dynamic cycle of influence, we fuel each other in our educational mission... be it thorny tests, understanding of concepts, or simply, having fun. More important than anything else, my ears, and heart are always open to them... they teach me how to teach.

A Little Bit About Me...

When I was a freshman in college, I knew that my future was in my hands. I befriended and contacted my chemistry professor and zoology advisor. I worked in both of their labs, and I was only a freshman! By studying in their research groups, I gained the experience necessary to intern at Sea Life Park Hawaii. In fact, I was published in 2007 after working for Dr. Charlie Cox in the Chemistry Department. Recognizing the need for more hands-on research experience, I found another opportunity with another professor in cellular biology. In addition to conducting this research, I co-wrote the research proposal for the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program. This was an honor, for we were awarded funding for the project!
Teaching requires a patient, easygoing individual since not all students learn at similar speeds. There is not one single way to teach, so it is important to encomp ... read more

I believe that the best way to teach is by integrating the artistic with the rational and have even founded a non-profit organization that is dedicated to teaching sustainability and systems theory using a combined approach. I hope to provide students with examples of interconnectedness in order for them to be able to synthesize information presented during lectures and readings with other aspects of their lives. I'm a very enthusiastic, patient, and inquiring teacher. My joy comes from building confidence and empowering students with the methods to tackle any problem.
