My passion for education blossomed while volunteering as a tutor with Somali refugee children in Pittsburgh, PA during college. I worked with families in their homes to develop English reading, writing, and speaking skills. After graduating with a B.A. in History and Political Science I joined Teach For America, where I taught first grade for two years and substitute taught pre-kindergarten through fifth grade for one year. A major focus while teaching first grade was developing literacy skills and instilling a love and enthusiasm for reading and writing in my students.
The most important thing about my teaching style is that I believe every child can achieve academic excellence and can be interested in learning. My teaching style is one that I obtained from two of my favorite college teachers whom I wished all others would duplicate themselves after. When I teach, I introduce myself and let others introduce themselves. I project an image of someone who is willing and able to assist and teach...someone who really does care (of which I have been told many times by former students). I let students know that if they have a question about anything, to please ask me. I am a detailed person and so I like to give detailed steps in achieving a desired outcome. I am positive minded and encourage my students on a positive level because how a person thinks is the direction they will be moving towards.

I was extremely driven to accomplish a long sought after goal of completing college while shift working and raising a family of four sons all on my own. I graduated Phi Theta Kappa, National Dean's List, and was offered internship in three different countries. China, Europe and Austrila. I taught all four of my son's to walk, talk, read, count, and finally socialites.
