I obtained a B.S. in engineering from Webb Institute in 1968, entered the U.S. Coast Guard and thereafter obtained a JD in Law from SUNY, Buffalo. I tutored underclassmen in calculus while at Webb and taught seventh and eighth grade math and science in a small catholic school, part time, while in law school. Following law school I was a prosecutor for six years after which I became a hearing officer for NYS OCFS. I retired from state service about one year ago, at age sixty-two. I began teaching as a college sophomore at MIT. For 9 years, I taught primarily Multivariable Calculus, but also single-variable Calculus, Linear Algebra, and several writing courses. I think it is more important to understand the student than to understand the material. Don't get me wrong - as a teacher I always re-educate myself to the material if need be - but I feel my real strength as an educator lies in finding a new way to teach the same concept. If a student is failing to learn, it is less often the material itself and more often the way it is being presented. Luckily, I got into a great university and found out, after taking a few core classes, that I actually love science. Once I really understood some of the key concepts, I found it to be fun and interesting.
