I obtained a B.S. in engineering from Webb Institute in 1968, entered the U.S. Coast Guard and thereafter obtained a JD in Law from SUNY, Buffalo. I tutored underclassmen in calculus while at Webb and taught seventh and eighth grade math and science in a small catholic school, part time, while in law school. Following law school I was a prosecutor for six years after which I became a hearing officer for NYS OCFS. I retired from state service about one year ago, at age sixty-two. I enjoy teaching children of all ages. I believe that a good teacher is one that can reach any child regardless of how that specific student learns best. One thing that I have found that works best is finding out the many interests of a student and then using those interests to engage the child. Once a child is engaged in the material, teaching is the easy part. I believe modeling is one of the key aspects in order for a child to be successful. I began teaching as a college sophomore at MIT. For 9 years, I taught primarily Multivariable Calculus, but also single-variable Calculus, Linear Algebra, and several writing courses. Since graduating, I have been involved in various volunteer tutoring efforts. My minors are in Math, German, and Writing. I think it is more important to understand the student than to understand the material. Before earning a BA in Biology at Skidmore College and after graduating high school, I took three years off to play hockey.
