I believe that in order to help a student you must first be able to connect with him/her. That could mean understanding a student’s background, researching the latest video games or playing softball after class. For example, several of the girls I worked with at the JEI Learning Center, spoke very little English. Often they got frustrated and just sort of shut down -- stopped responding. At first I tried to have them draw pictures but when that didn't work, I asked them to show me something from home. They folded cranes and strawberries out of the paper that I gave them. Though the exercise didn't help them understand verb tense, it did help build trust between us. After that, when they felt insecure or confused, I was less intimidating.

A Little Bit About Me...

I hold a BS and MS in Biology. I started to tutor college student while an undergraduate at Mesa State College.I was awarded the GK-12 Fellowship for two years while at the University of Northern Colorado. This fellowship placed me in k-12 classrooms to aid in teaching sciene. During that time I taught kindergarten, second grade, 8th grade, and 9th - 12th grades.Later I was awarded the GAANN Fellowship and continued to teach colleged level Biology. I have experience in classroom setting, lab setting, and biology trips outside.
My style of teaching includes visual explanation (white board or chalk board), oral discussion, and hands-on manipulation when ever possible. Teaching has become a major part of my life. I have taught mostly university students and adults but like teaching children as well. I believe that teaching older students is more challenging than teaching kids. I think adults require a more in depth explanation of grammar rules and structures. In my classes I gave these explanations with an easy going, patient, and fun attitude. With children, I think it is important to show them that hard work is important to achieve success in their future. I am an active teacher. I want students to understand the subject in the context of their own lives as opposed to just learning definitions. If they can realate the information to an actual happening, they are more likely to remember. In terms of test preparation, aside from learning the information it is important to work on test-taking skills (relaxation, focus, etc.). Being prepared for such large tests is more than just knowing, it is recalling under pressure. I work with all of that to help the student.
