I believe that in order to help a student you must first be able to connect with him/her. That could mean understanding a student’s background, researching the latest video games or playing softball after class. For example, several of the girls I worked with at the JEI Learning Center, spoke very little English. Often they got frustrated and just sort of shut down -- stopped responding. At first I tried to have them draw pictures but when that didn't work, I asked them to show me something from home. They folded cranes and strawberries out of the paper that I gave them. Though the exercise didn't help them understand verb tense, it did help build trust between us. After that, when they felt insecure or confused, I was less intimidating.

I am an active teacher. I want students to understand the subject in the context of their own lives as opposed to just learning definitions. If they can realate the information to an actual happening, they are more likely to remember. In terms of test preparation, aside from learning the information it is important to work on test-taking skills (relaxation, focus, etc.). I worked as a tutor all through college at Iowa State University. I tutored Math (up through Trig), general and organic chemistry, and statistics 101. These were the main classes I taught, but I also did Spanish 1, ecology, and food science/nutrition. I also tutored some high school students in all subjects but mostly math and science.
I love helping people. I believe that no one is stupid just some people are better in some areas than other people. I enjoy helping people learn because I love seeing the "light bulb click on above their head" when they finally grasp a concept. As an undergraduate, I tutored peers in comprehension and completion of English writing assignments. While in graduate school, I taught second graders the art and craft of poetry writing. I view the "cognitive reductionism" currently driving educational standardization as problematic.
